    Hi Folks,

I'm considering exchanging my two internal HDs in RAID-1 to SSDs in RAID-0. The HDD is a real performance killer compared to SSDs...

I know this sounds terribly silly, but I would hate to have to re-install the OS (Win7 64 Bit) and applications because I have so much stuff installed
(I'm a data warehouse consultant and have several relational databases
and programs which require lots and lots of configuration... :( ).

Any recommendations on how to achieve such a migration with as little pain as possible? Or are there no alternatives to re-installing everything anew?

    Cheers,
    Mario

Going from raid 1 to raid 0 is going to require a new install due to the drivers required for RAID 0. Sorry. I've tried cloning a single drive to a RIAD 0 setup and it won't boot. Same thing with reimaging.

    Hi DR650SE,

don't be such a drag from the start... :D

Shouldn't it be possible to convert the RAID-1 to a RAID-0 to start with
with the HDDs that are currently installed?

In fact, the Intel Rapid Storage Technology application on my laptop says in the Help File that this is possible. Here an excerpt:

    Changing Volume Type
You can choose to change the type of an existing volume based on your storage system needs. The following configurations are possible:
    Change type from
    To
    2-disk recovery volume
    2-disk RAID 1
    2-disk RAID 1
    2-disk recovery volume

    2-disk RAID 0

    3, 4, 5 or 6-disk RAID 0

    3, 4, 5 or 6-disk RAID 5

    2-disk RAID 0
    3, 4, 5 or 6-disk RAID 5
    3-disk RAID 0
    4, 5 or 6-disk RAID 5
    4-disk RAID 0
    5 or 6-disk RAID 5
    4-disk RAID 10
    4, 5 or 6-disk RAID 5

If I did this as a first step then I would be in RAID-0 mode. I could then clone the volume, chnage the HDs to SSDs and bring the image back.

Alternatively, clone the current RAID-1, put in the SSDs, an finally convert to RAID-0.

I know, I know, I sound like a nutty optimist but I was hoping someone would have already gone from HDs to SSD with having to re-install everything.

Regards from Munich, Bavaria, where we're hoping to win the Champion's League againt Chelsea
