I know I've seen before that someone ran into this problem but I can't for the life of me find it on here searching through the thread list.

Whenever I wake my R2 up it goes to a black screen with just the cursor showing. Is there a fix?

What drivers are you using? I am on 10.3 and never have this happen.

Ahhh haha yes I had this too, I could still login by hitting tab or something then typing in my password and windows would load. This was very annoying. I was using default drivers.

This is usually resolved by reinstalling video driver. Try 10.6 if you are at it, they seem to be pretty good.

I had the same problems on my M17x-R2. The Accelerometer/Free Fall Sensor driver was the culprit. Try to disable it or uninstall the driver for the device in the device manager and see if that fixes it.
Mine is waking up from hibernation and sleep perfectly fine since uninstalling that driver.

might be an issue with ATI powerplay. Try disabling that, I know there were similar problems with the MSI GX640 with the 5850 and ATI drivers and powerplay. After disabling powerplay, the problem was fixed.

    Drivers
    ATI Technologies - 8.68.2-091125a...
    CCC Version - 2009.1125.2309.41491

The screen goes black at random times, not when doing one thing specifically (installing, playing a game, waking from sleep). I can still hear background noises when the screen is black. Sometimes it will work properly, other times it wont.

I hit fn+F6, fn+F7 which has never done anything. The only way to get out of the black screen is to force a reboot. I have uninstalled the ST Accelerometer in device manager with negative success. I tried disabling powerplay but i just got another blackscreen.

    Hello,
I have this same problem, can anyone lend me a hand? I had this issue when i first installed the pro OS and have not been able to fix it. I have installed and uninstalled the drivers for the video cards countless times. I uninstalled the Accelerometers. and it still happens ever time i open my laptop after any more then 10min. I have looked online and tried everything i could find short of reinstalling the OS. any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Here is what i have.
    M17X-R2
    Win7 pro 64bit
    Ati x2 4870 (8.732.0.0) 10.5 just installed today.
Latest bios and all other drivers are from Dell site and up to date.

I'd try 2 more things even though the chances are slim:
    1) Try disabling all the power saving schemes (when on AC power). Control Panel -> Power Options -> Change Plan Settings -> Change Advanced Power Settings.
    2) Revert to the older A02 BIOS.

This problem is the same no matter what bios i have. i just updated the bios a few weeks back. to try and fix this issue. it was doing it before and after the bios upgrade. i will look into the power options now and see if this changes anything. thanks very much for all the help.

Try uninstalling/disabling the Free Fall Sensor/Accelerometer driver and see if that helps.

DO NOT disable powerplay. ever. the clocks of the gpu will throttle down to 300/400mhz and not upclock when a game or other graphics-intensive app is loaded.

I'd just like to add that ever since I went from dual 4870's to a single 5870, I no longer have this problem, but I used to.

I have tried uninstalling/disabling the Free Fall Sensor/Accelerometer, have re-installed ATI drivers. I press ctrl+alt+del - then esc and its still black, i even cannot see the mouse cursor. the only way to get out of it is to restart or put the system on standby...

Am i the only one who cant ctrl+alt+del out of this issue?

Alright, I need some serious help. I've had my M17x R2 for 3 days, and last night before I went to sleep I changed my "close lid" parameter to "do nothing". I opened my lid when I woke up to find nothing but an unresponsive black screen. When I tried to restart I could hear the login screen sound, but I can't ctrl+alt+del my way out of it. I saw someone say they can tab and enter the password, but I can't do that either. I can run in Safe Mode with network capabilities, but I can't install any drivers for some reason. I'm pretty sure I have 10.6 drivers, but I'm not near my compy to find out.

    wat do?

Ok, I found a way around it.

Run in "Safe Mode with networking capabilities".
Follow the instructions in this link-

Log On Automatically at Startup - Windows 7 Forums

This will allow you to bypass the login screen altogether. Once I did this, my monitor was very confused and seemed to be treating my screen as if it was a secondary screen. FN+F6 "extended" the screen, therefore letting me back to my desktop. Will update if anything else comes up...
