Hey guys, I've been playing around with Guild Wars 2 and I'm finding that occasionally my FPS drops drastically. I understand that the game is very CPU intensive and it isn't yet optimized. When I check my CPU performance I can see one of my threads running at nearly 100% while the rest sit there (overall CPU usage 15%).

I'd like to disable HT on the 2630qm and see if that helps. I found this post and was going to install the new BIOS but this is a A08 version while I'm running A10.

Is there any harm / possible to go tot he custom A08? Or is there a custom A10 or better way to just disable HT and improve my game performance?

    Thank you.

why to disable hyper threading, I mean does it have any disadvantages?? If you wanna disable cores and run at highest clock I would understand but disabling hyper threading??

Maybe thats what I should look into instead. I found a few posts that mentioned disabling HT would make CPU intensive games run faster. It was just a strategy I was going to try.

It would also lower your CPU temps a lot. HT will dump an extra 10°C into the heatsink, on average. I've been wondering if there was a way to disable it for ages.

How about try running ThrottleStop and turn on the Log File option, go play a game and find out what your CPU is doing. It might be throttling for a reason because it is over heating or consuming too much power. A log file will let you know what is happening. PM me if you want me to have a look at some data while gaming.

You can disable hyper-threading using the unlocked A08 (orA04) BIOS. Enter the BIOS and go to the Power tab, select Advanced CPU Control and set HT Support to Disabled. That said, disabling HT has resulted in reduced CPU performance every time I have tested using Core i7 quad core CPU's, notwithstanding the occasional comment or recommendation to the contrary seen on internet boards. It's easy enough to test for your specific use or application.

^^ yeah, I cannot imagine instead of saving a few C on temps, disabling HT can help with anything.. after all they are not physical cores..

I have the i7-2360QM in my Dell XPS 15 L502x and have just disabled hyperthreading using a modded BIOS and I'm sorry I didn't do it sooner.

The issues I were having were mainly random lagging, terrible performance in online games. Sometimes it would be fine, others terrible and would sometimes be fixed by restarting the game. All other variables have been ironed out, internet connection, network, everything! No overheating, I use a power profile for gaming with the CPU set to 99% to prevent turboboost from causing overheating.

This issue has dissapeard after disabling HT, all processes are now given a real core to run on instead of some vital process being given a virtual core to run on, which is waiting on idle time on a real core to execute. While this time might be really small, it adds up to perceptible lags in performance and responsiveness.

Other issues I have experienced over the two years with this laptop have been audio skipping, lag when using the touchpad for scrolling, lag in internet explorer and Chrome and lag while tab switching between running programs.

All of these stopped when I disabled hyperthreading.

I don't know if this is a general issue or a specific issue with this processor as this is the only one I have, I can only tell you what worked for me!

There is no issue with trying this for yourself if your BIOS allows it. Turning HT off, Windows will recognise 4 cores. Turning it back on windows will recognise 8 cores, no need for reinstalling the OS or any other nonsense!

This is the one thing I wish I had done ages ago that would have saved me from investigating all of these other annoying little issues.

Never had any problems like that with my machine. Pretty sure you have some other factors at play affecting your machine.
