I noticed on the configure page that dell now allows you to select the 120hz screen option with the 6970 selected (though it throws up a compatability warning). I understand that the 3D will not work with the 6970 but will it still display the 120hz refresh rate?

I'm not so interested in playing games in 3D..but more interested in playing games above 60hz for smoother playback.

Order 2 machines and swap the screen i know that is going to be the only way to know if the 120hz screen works with the 6970 :D ;)

Peel it. Grab an exacto knife or something, and wrap it in thin cloth or toilet paper or something.

Nah, I'm just kidding, as I'm sure you are too :)

I'd like to know the answer to OP's question, cuz 120hz refresh would be pretty tight on any of the gpus, actually.

You're right...won't let me add it to the cart without "resolving" conflicted hardware.

I understand that the nVision hardware won't be compatible...but since the 6970 supports 120hz, theoretically it should work with the screen.

I believe iNap one of the forum members here had tried numerous times to get this to work with the AMD cards and it will not work no matter what.

I guess Dell designed this machine to not be compatible with the 120hz screen + AMD card . i think it was explained as to why it wont in one of the threads awhile ago.

AMD doesn't have a working 3D solution for the notebook marketplace. This is why Dell and other manufacturers saw no point in configuring a 120 Hz screen with a non-3D compliant graphics card. HD3D is for desktop graphics only at this current time. The other bad part with AMD's rendition is having to pay for an iZ3D license, as iZ3D provides the software conversion to 3D.

I think the Clevo notebooks are able to use the 120hz screen and the AMD cards just like HP and the Envy 17 3d is a AMD equipped 3d notebook.

They do exist in some shape and form just not on the Dell side of things.

There are two plugs on the M17x motherboard for the monitor, ATI GPU and 120Hz panel don't work together because 1) they take different routes and 2) some other limitation.

That's why I was curious to see if with the modified BIOS one could disable the iGP (since it won't run 120Hz panels as of today) and run from the start with the ATi GPU.

That's odd seeing that AMD makes no mention of utilizing 3D with their notebook GPU's. I guess iZ3D is able to adapt to the notebook GPU's. The performance though still isn't up to par compared to 3D Vision.
