Hi, I've noticed the HDD temps are rather high on my M17 -I got it with a seagate 320gb 7200rpm in bay 0, but removed that to put an ssd boot drive and a hitachi 7k500 in bay 1 - the temp went up to 57C at one point (when there was no specific hdd load) so i ended up replacing that with the stock 320 from seagate - i saw 52-53 as the highest after transferring about 200gb of files via usb 3.0. The SSD's sensor doesn't work but it seems a bit warm as well, but at least its being used for the OS.
The thing is the hitachi never crossed 45 under any circumstances on my thinkpad...
I'm wondering if the alienware thermal design allows heat from the fans/heatsinks to blow towards the bay 1 hard drive (right next to GPU) cos it seems to go up along with my graphics card - i've done nothing but boot my comp in high performance mode with my 6970m enabled and the temp is 49C... which seems awfully high for when there is 0 drive activity on the hdd monitor.
If you guys could share your HDD bay 0 and HDD bay 1 temps, or have any insight in to why my temps are so high, that would be great!
Could installing Intel's Rapid storage drivers help? I have to add - this is after a clean install. (never checked the temps for the stock setup)
Thanks,
Carthik

My 750gb HDD temp is around 50-52. Lowest 48 so far. SSD sensor doesnt work I guess.
Dookie, you can use hwinfo32 to check HDD temps also. -
-
Dookie, could you please report your hdd temps here too along with estimated room temp, cpu, gpu temps? Make sure your 6970 is turned on and system is on high performance for about half hour if possible...
Mr Happy, yea i have similar temps from my stock seagate 320gb 7200 rpm hdd. I used cpuidhwmonitor. Checked with hwinfo32 - its exactly the same (i've had programs reporting differently before!) -
I played Crysis for about 20 minutes, and then exited it. It's about 40minutes in since I first started up hwinfo32. HDD temp is 37, maxed at 37. I looked at the log that I made it do, and it said 36 for the second HDD temp (the first one to its left was also 36).
Oh btw, thank you for referring me to hwinfo. It's really cool and even tells me at what speed the cpu is running (per core), which I think is totally neato. -
dookie, I think your room temp plays bigger role in keeping your temps low haha. In my room the temp is around 27-30C usually.
I think im going to get a cooler! -
I won't know if I'll need to repaste or buy a cooler until summer. I think the consensus has been that the temps I've had are a-okay so far.
