Most people here do ACHI for SSD's as it's the easiest way for SSD's. That's how I did my OCZ 240GB Vertex 3 Max IOPS. You will be fine ACHI

I have a 750GB Seagate and a 256GB M4 Crucial in my M17x R3 and I went with the Raid option. The two drives aren't paired and I haven't had a single problem. Also if you choose to go with the Raid option, juts to let you know that it supports the trimming future on the SSD. I recommend Raid.

The RAID controller is pretty decent if you don't mind the extra screen it shows on boot. :)

Either will work, but AHCI is generally faster. AHCI has been rock steady for me with a 256GB M4 SSD + HDD storage drive. Raid is easier because it is the default setup and so you don't have to learn how to switch and/or format for a different mode. I boot to Win 7 in around 9.6 seconds using AHCI -- not as fast as some, but fast enough given that it is not optimized for boot speed.

When I first installed my SSD is had the system set to RAID and it was rather unstable - BSOD every once in a while. I then switched to AHCI and no problems so far but it could be due to the full reinstall I did. Speed wise I cant say numerically but they feel about equally fast.
