So, I've searched around a little bit, and with no luck, I have not found my answer. I am wondering if I take a bone stock mx17 r3, and add a 120hz screen, and switch the 6870m for a 580m or a 680m (with enough money) all I would need to buy would be glasses? or would I need an entire kit.

    Thank you,
    asha

(unrelated note, if I were upgrading ram, and I got 1866 ram, would it work, and just down clock itself to what ever speed with the 2630qm?)

That sounds about right, but don't quote me on it. I know the 3D display plugs into the motherboard on a different plug, but I would imagine all R3s have the same motherboard, ergo you should have the same special port for the 120Hz screen. You will need an Nvidia GPU to run the 3D screen, but I am not sure if the newest R3 BIOS update enabled the 3D content over the 680m. The 580m should work though.

As for your RAM, yes, it should downclock the speed down to lower speed. With that in mind, you may not want to spend on higher memory frequency when the system will just lower that speed down anyway.

Just remember it is a PITA to replace the screen, and often leaves visual damage. Oh, and make sure to be careful with the display's ribbon cable!

that is just if you are trying to specifically replace just the LCD panel. he is better off just trying to buy a whole 3d LCD assembly because he needs the emitter and such as well. Please note that nobody has got the 680m working with 3d yet so that may not be an option. :(

Well, there ya go. Need to go with the 580m for your GPU if you want to upgrade to 3D.

Newegg has an 8 gig stick of 1866 for 46$, and if I plan on upgrading the CPU anyways, then it's a good deal. Also, 3d will work eventually hopefully. And buying a 3d entire ensemble, that's a good idea. I think I will just try and find the parts separately that way I can get a good 120mhz screen. Thanks guy.

Who is the manufacturer? Not all 1866 ram is plug and play if I remember correctly.

What do you mean noone has gotten the 680m working with 3D??

Why is that the top option on the build?
