    A mod closed the last thread about the 485m due to bickering on whether or not it is a good idea. That was not the point of the thread and it is still required to have this discussed. If you don't like the idea of having the 485m that's fine but please keep the debate elsewhere.

    This thread is STRICTLY for discussing a solution to get the 485m fully functional within a m17x R3 and NOTHING else. all other conversation does not belong, period. Neptune if you would not mind please post an update reviewing what you did to get your 485m Working to the point it is at now so that this thread has an update.

    We are talking with NVidia now to try to get a 3D fix for this card you can follow the conversation and get updates at Alienware R3 3D laptop - NVIDIA Forums

    Note to MOD: I understand why you closed the last thread don this topic but we do need to have a thread open for this as there are many of us still trying to get this resolved. I have clearly stated what this thread is for and that there is to be NO off topic discussions so lets give this one more shot, don't screw it up guys.

    Thanx for the link :D also as a side note for who reads it, use that thread as a *NOT TO DO* when ti comes to all the bickering that went on, lets please stay on topic and only discuss getting the 3D fix for those who are trying to get it.

    Thanks everyone

    Glad this thread will be strictly professional. Can anyone list out exactly how far we've got? I believe the 485m works with modding, so does that mean it is already coded in vbios? Also, do the fans work properly with it?

    According to Neptune it was just a simple mod, I found where he responded to me in the previous thread and quoted him below.

    He has the GPU running fine with 120hz, the only thing we don't have working or know if it will work is 3D capabilities, all signs thus far point to a somewhat simple fix if Nvidia will help us out which is why we are talking with them on there own forums.

    how much does a 460m card sell for... and where do you possibly sell it, i cant imagine someone except a very small group of people on craigslist looking for a notebook GPU, desktop gpus are sold on there all the time but notebooks are so specificly made

    LV Neptune wanted better fan controls I believe. I am not too sure if the fan's were working as smooth in terms stepwise RPM. But he had run all the benchmarks etc fine..so I do not think its been a hurdle on the fan front on prolonged use thermal wise.

    For now the use of Mumak's Hwinfo (nice job with the fan control implementation) is necessary to control the fans manually as they fluctuate when not under load.

    Hello all. I have quietely followed this case from beggining. And now I got one idea and want to share it. LVNeptune one way to find if it has something to do with vbios will be if you flash your 460m with some other vbios that is from company that did not introduced 3D yet, or older one before they introduced 3D. And see if you still have 3D capabilities on your R3. If yes then vbios is ruled out.

    WARNING: vbios flashing can possibly render your card useless.

    Just wondering if the 3D service can be forced to start

    Read this from the Nvidia forceware guide page here, just wondering if you can force the service to start manually therefore enableing 3D Vision

    TweakGuides.com - Nvidia Forceware Tweak Guide

    When the Forceware drivers install on your system, they install new Services and startup items. Some of these can be removed or disabled, depending on your circumstances. If you're unfamiliar with how to disable a Service, or how to find and temporarily or permanently remove startup items, see the Services and Startup Programs chapters of the TweakGuides Tweaking Companion.

    ■Nvidia Driver Helper Service - As of the 260 Forceware series onwards you should keep the Nvidia Driver Helper Service set at its default, or set it to Manual, because if it is Disabled it will prevent the Nvidia Control Panel from opening.

    ■NVIDIA Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service - This service is only useful if you have specific hardware to use the Nvidia 3D Vision functionality. Since most users do not have this hardware, then this service is best set to Disabled as it is not required for normal 3D graphics functionality. The best option however is to remove this component altogether, which can be done by going to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs in XP or Control Panel>Programs and Features in Vista & 7, selecting the 'Nvidia 3D Vision Driver' item and uninstalling it. This will remove the Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D Driver Service as well as the relevant driver components, which again are not necessary for normal gaming, and are only used if you specifically have Stereoscopic 3D glasses and 120Hz LCD monitor.

    LVNeptune already been here but here is the link in case someone else can use the info to provide a solution with reg key

    How to enable Stereo 3D on any 120 Hz display using NVIDIA 3D Vision

    Replace device ID of 460m with 485m
    Done.

    or, Point the 485 installation to the section being used by 460M in the proper inf

    It's pretty easy to do yourself. I don't have the file or I'd share.

    i've used both, but not on the same notebooks so can't really give a fair comparison of the two. both work really well from my experience. Currently using mx-4.

    what he said. sorry to be a pain, Neptune, but we haven't gotten any help from anybody else at this point. if you don't mind passing me your inf file from this point on I'll be happy to share it with anyone else who needs it in the future.

    the inf files are specific to the driver version you use so once you download the driver (270.55) if I remember is probably the one to use - the link is in the old thread or use the 460m Dell driver

    open the inf file with notepad of the driver you are going to use nvcv.inf and scroll right to the bottom and you will see the following lines, add the 3 lines at the bottom with 485M in them, this should be enough I believe

    sample

    NVIDIA_DEV.0DD1.06 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0DF0.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.0DF0.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0DF4.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.0DF4.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0DF4.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E30.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E30.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E30.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E30.04 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E31.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M"
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E31.02 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M "
    NVIDIA_DEV.0E31.03 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 485M "

    Yes, but some dissapointment....like if i put all max black ops, it,s 63FPS,
    if i put all max crysis 2 without filter it,s 35FPS... It's the same as my gtx460m
    Maybe driver goes wrong i don't know :? but the cooling is better than my gtx460m.

    Performance is probably from the driver you modded/used.
    I modded 267.something yesterday and apparently messed something up: it downclocked my 460m to ~250mhz core and wouldn't take any overclocks.
    edit: it was actually the latest verde...so 270.something

    I think performance discussion is ok as long as it is relevant to the 485m and as long as we do not get too offtrack, IF certain mods need to be done in order to have it running at 100% even without 3D its relevant because when it comes to 3D now it is up to Nvidia to give us those answers.

    I Put screen detailled on how to removed the retention clips because when I was doing that, my camera has no more battery... :(
    But screen are detailled and It,s a complete tutorial without how to replace finished work...everyone should be good enought to do it I think...
