should be the same HSF, just a straight forward swap, perhaps purchase some new pads for the memory and use some AC MX4 paste should good to go.

I installed the 6990m and reset the bios and installed the 6990m driver and it runs fine except for some artifacts in Skyrim, but how do I get my R3 to read it as 6990m and not just 6900m?? it shows the 6990. clock and shader speeds but still says 6900m. It's not a huge deal but I want it to say 6990m.

    Any advice please??

    Hey dude,

I don't think you can get it to read 6990m, since both the 6970 and 6990m uses the same chip.

Are you using a Dell card? The mxm-upgrade and engineering samples only show as 6900 series.

A little more performance, the 6970 has 960 shaders and the 6990 has 1160 shaders.

Wingman its a dell card. Got it for Xmas. My wife bought it from the eBay seller ''upgradeyourlaptop.'' I installed it myself and runs pretty good. Batman arkham city, assassins creed revelations, rage, skyrim, serious Sam 3 and battlefield 3 all run great. I get at least 5-10 fps more on each game with the same settings set.

upgradeyourlaptop sells Clevo cards - it's not Dell and it's not Eurocom. So if you bought it from him - like myself - it's a Clevo card.

Before you post a GPU screenshot of your 'Dell' card check the vbios
Try overclocking the memory to 1100 also
    And perform a 3DMarkVantage run

All 6990Ms display as 6900M due to AMD's drivers

Win man I'm getting 25-45 fps and it stutters and has artifacts in game. I'm running on 12.1 drivers. I might try the 11.11c performance Drivers.

Actually upgradeyourlaptop is Eurocom and therefore sell Eurocom cards (not Clevo). Although it's all relative anyway.

Ok so, I had my GPU running this morning on 12.1 drivers and wanted to go back to 11.10drivers. So when i did it gave me weird colors so i restarted on the intel card and unintalled CCC and the drivers and then when I tried to reinstall the drivers and CCC it wouldnt. The device manager doesnt even recognize that i have a discrete GPU but my BIOS does. I'm running on BIOS A08, i reflashed the BIOS, I reset the bios doing a power drain. I took out my 6990m and put back in my 6970m and its the same. Doesnt get read. Windows restore wont work, neither will the recovery disk. Had to stop install and undo it all. Now I'm just stuck on what the heck to do??

Please someone come up with something. Dell tried to help and they got nowhere. Even tried windows repair and still didnt work.

Been trying to fix this for 6 hrs now.

have you tried driver sweeper to get rid of the AMD files?

Try reinstalling windows and see where you get.

Every time I try to install new drivers it only uses the info it needs for the Intel chip. Tried reinstalling windows and doesn't finish. Says its not compatible with, my hardware. I may have a really bad virus, I don't know.

Try clearing the CMOS. Unplug from AC, remove the battery, take off the bottom cover and disconnect the coin-cell CMOS battery. Hold down the power button for about 10 seconds, plug in the CMOS battery, then connect AC power. After booting into Windows, install the system battery again.

Something strange may be happening where the system BIOS is staying stuck on the IGP and not allowing the discreet display adapter be accessed.

I'm skeptical that Respawn is going to help in your situation. I think the issue is deeper than the level of the OS.
Clearing the CMOS should have reset your BIOS defaults. Sometimes it does not. Did you try flashing a different system BIOS version, or just re-flashed the same one? If not, try flashing to a different version. Doing this should clear out all settings and implement new defaults. Given the 6970M card does the same thing, it's unlikely that your 6990M card is bad.
It seems that something in the BIOS is forcing your system to boot only from the Intel IGP. With an unlocked BIOS you can actually choose whether the system boot priority starts with the discreet graphics or IGP. I don't have access to an M17x R3 to check, but my assumption is that this setting is hidden on the Dell BIOS menu like it is on the M18x.

Have you tried using the graphics switch within Windows already? The system is going to boot to the last display adapter selected, so if you switched to the IGP before uninstalling the AMD drivers, it is probably going to stay there until you manually switch to the AMD GPU. (Flashing to a different BIOS version might help get it switched back to the discreet graphics if using the switch within Windows fails.)

Mr fox, my alienrespawn worked. I have reinstall everything now but its back to normal. Even fixed a bsod issue I had with waking the PC up from sleep. My 6990m. Is perfectly fine. Ran the heaven benchmark and did just as good as it did before the issue. Plus I knew it wasn't the 6990 because I took it out and put the 6970 in and it was doing the same thing. Just hoping my save games aren't completly gone. Saved the user data from steam so I should be good.

Yea it worked pretty good. You can ven save files you want to keep before using it. I just decided to do a clean install and have everything wiped. Kinda wish I didnt now. Oh well.
