    Hi guys,

i had a dell tech out 2 days ago to replace my 6990m because the old one was faulty and my gpu seems to be running hotter now.

Before i had it changed, it would sit on 67-69 degrees when gaming. now it gets up to 72-73 degrees!

Does this matter and is this too hot or shouldnt i worry?

Second question; Before i had the 6990m changed, the hot air coming out the rear exhaust vent would come out straight. Now that it has been changed (gpu fan), i now have to place my hand more to the centre of the laptop to feel the air coming out of the vent. It would appear the fan has not been put on straight (can it sit in more ways that one?) Is this an issue or just me worrying too much?

    Thanks.

    72 is still not bad
Dell uses odd thermal paste that is already in single square packages ready for application. I would recommend pulling your GPU and re applying quality thermal paste. ICD7, Indigo, MX-3/4, etc.
If air isn't coming straight out of the vent, there might be an obstruction as the fan can only sit one way.
Something might be in the vents, simply remove the back cover and the vents are very easy to access and inspect

Ok. Thankyou. I'll inspect the vents after i'm home from work today. What is the critical temp for the 6990m in the M17x? Like how hot can it get before it will cook lol?

I think it is safe until thermal shutdown which is probably 95-100*c
I have not been able to get mine up to even 80*c so I think we dont have to really worry about hitting shutoff unless running some serious benchmarks / furmark or 100*F+ ambient temps while playing two games at once

link, if you want stellar temps, you'll have to repaste with a quality paste like PK-1, MX-4, or OCZ Freeze.

Regarding your temps, they are actually quite good. Low 70's while gaming? This on the stock paste job? That's not bad.

Just as a comparison, download and run Furmark burn-in test for 5 mins. Here are my results: I stabilize at 67c. It goes up to 72c, but then the fans kick in and the temps just stay at 67c. You can see the graph. My 6990m has been repasted with Prolimatech PK-1

PK-1 is good. The best in my humble opinion.

    what are your furmark temps?

I too would recommend PK-1, probably the best paste ive used so far. It brought my 580m's temps from 70~71 down to about 64~65 (occasional 66) under max load. ICD7 is also great stuff, but can be hard to work with and will stain most heatsink and GPU surfaces.

Ive always used (and im sure everyone here would recommned) the heat sink spread method as opposed to the tool spread method. Essentially you apply an amount of thermal interface material, and then place the heatsink flat ontop of the GPU using the heat sink to spread the material. If you look online for 6990m repaste, im sure you can find a guide or maybe even a video of the procedure.

johnny, i put a small dab of paste in the middle of the 6990m die and let the heatsink spread it out.

Your temps are pretty good for a sager...sager's typically run slightly hotter than alienware so you shouldn't compare to my temps

no johnny, pk-1 doesn't have cure time. Check your heatsink contact.

ok, then give it a few hrs and see what happens.

The thing about IC Diamond is that it permanently alters the GPU die and the copper heatsink surface. Over time, it might affect your overall temps. IC diamond also does very well in poor contact situations so it could be that your heatsink isn't making the best contact to the GPU die. Its too hard to say

All brand thermal greases is about the same, why u guys worried about that? Everyone uses what he like.
