What is the max rpm of cpu fan and gpu fan?

How to manually control these fans separately??

4100-4300. Haven't found a way to regulate separately, but HWiNFO64 lets you control both at the same time/rate, more or less.

Thing is if i control both and set at 4000 my system crashes and screen goes blank. I think it is because the cpu speed is lower.

Anyone manually controlling the fans? If so, what speeds have you set the fans to?

HWINFO64 is always evolving, with new versions issued constantly to address a new issue somewhere. But sometimes a fix for some other setup introduces glitches for us. You just have to stay up with the changes (AW issues tend to be addressed very quickly) or, once you have one that does what you need and is solid, stay with it. Martin Mumak, the author, is always available to help resolve problems. Very nice, very accommodating fellow, who maintains a support forum at TI. Alienware Fan Control.

I crank it to full on the slider but it doesn't actually make it go @7000. It will max out at around 4200 for me.

I have set it at custom 5000 @ 50+ celsius and 3500 below that. Working fine now. Thanks..

My max speed as seen in hwinfo is 4300 for both cpu and gpu

An alternative, keyed off the 580M. A little quieter.

Does SpeedFan work good for you M17x R3 guys?
Could be a good alternative too.

On idle + when just general word processing and internet browsing/youtube both my fans switch off.. alongside my SSD the laptop makes NO noise whatsoever, it's completely silent... that's normal?

Just wondering because I adore the silence from this 17" beast.

SpeedFan doesn't recognize the fans on my R3, so there's no option to regulate or adjust them. Unless I'm doing it wrong.

@GeoCake: Yep, that's pretty much normal.

Thank you Alienware for making a laptop that is easy as hell to clean~! for once I got a lappy from them that is super easy to dust bust! if you ever have temp problems, open the bottom up, and clean that sucker out =^_^= if you are playing intense games, chances are you dont have the lappy on your lap... so I would go get a laptop cooler... the U3 has three fans that you can put everywhere, so one for the CPU, one for the GPU, and one for the middle of the lappy (that gets hot too).

best of luck to you hot runners, and keep living "cool"

    A couple questions about using HWiNFO32 to control a m17x R3's fans:

    1. With Windows 7 64-bit, I should use HWiNFO64, not HWiNFO32?

    2. Does HWiNFO only manage the fans while the HWiNFO program is open? If so, then I need to permanently keep HWiNFO's 2-3 windows up (never had to with Rivatuner)? And how can I make it run on startup?

    3. HWiNFO only shows one fan control option ("Fan1 & 2"), which only seems to be affecting the GPU fan (6990m). Can I control other fans ("Fan2" and "Fan3" are greyed out -- I can't select settings for them)?

    4. What are the m17x R3's maximum fan speeds (6990m)? What do other owners recommend setting fans to (for gaming)?

    5. How can I have my average temperature show in the taskbar (like Rivatuner does)? If HWiNFO can't do it, can anyone recommend a separate program that can?

I can only answer a few of those questions.

You can use which ever version although I recommend 64 for 64 obviously :D

You can click minimize all and it will hide away in your taskbar and still manage.

HWiNFO controls both fans at the same time with one slider. That is the limitation of the Compal EC.

Quick question...Do you think its bad for the system to have the fans running on max the entire time??

interesting question for you gentlemen, I feel as if my fans are dying. What leads me to think this is the fact that when i turn them up in hwinfo64 they kinda stutter, die down to a low rpm then they go to the rpm i set in the program. Also, my temps have been a little higher than normal. Do you guys think its time to get new ones?
