    Hello,

So I just received my new M17x a few days ago and am already having issues. For the first two days I was able to play games without a problem, everything worked great.

    Specs:

    i7 2670QM
    8 gigs of RAM
    Nvidia GTX 580M

Yesterday I started to run into an issue where every time I launch a game (specifically Swtor, Left4Dead 2, Starcraft 2) I either get a BSOD or freeze, where I am able to interact with the computer - move cursor, launch task manager - but after that I get a hard lock and need to shut down manually.

I've tried all I can think of, from dell's provided drivers & nvidia's newest and beta drivers, using system restore, and even just did a clean install of windows 7. Still running into the same issues.

Really upset that I just spent so much money on something that refuses to work. Please let me know if more info is needed / what I can do next.

    Thanks.

Edit: Managed to get this after launching Left4Dead 2, it crashed about a minute later :[

    BSOD I'm getting is:

Attempt to reset the display driver and recover from timeout failed.

    Stop: 0x00000116 (0xFFFFFA8008DDE010, 0xFFFFF88002FC5F14, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009A, 0x0000000000000004)

It is the video driver, it either recovers and the game in use crashes or the timeout is exceeded and windows calls a BSOD on you! But the cause can be a lot of things. I'd start by putting on the latest driver dell publish, call them, and let them fix it. I reckon they will quickly suggest a replacement 580 to start with. I've had 2 that were not functioning well.

You could check temps in realtime, so you can see it in-game before it crashes using MSIAfterburner but it does not sound heat related :(

    Hi again.
Have you tried the inbuilt dell hardware diags? I think it is on F12 at boot. Also get 'whocrashed' to analyse the BSOD's and see what driver or process is causing it.

MOnitor the temperatures (idle, under load, and just before it crashes) and report back here.
If the temperatures are fine, i'd already put my money on a dud card. I've seen this error many times before, and I can't recall a single occasion where it wasn't a faulty card.

i have already done that and i have already replaced my motherboard, my video card, my heatsinks , my hard drive and finally my cpu , but nothing helped me.
i have formatted my laptop 3 times i have updated my windows and i have download an installed several nvidia drivers (more than 10 ) i use cc cleaner ,disk defragment but still nothing

also i have already analysed the error , error code 116 and the file which probably cause the problem is the nvkflt.sys and yes the file is in the display driver.....pffffff

other ideas??? it happens only when i nvidia and doesn t happen when i use integrated graphics (cpu)
the games which i am using are games which i used to play without any problems. i try my laptop to all kind of games. for the first time the bsod happend while i was watching video

    any ideas?

    Not a lot I'm afraid :(.

You've just about replaced everything. I'd still double check the logs with qhocrashed as the latest one might be different (but probably not). It all points to a failing video card. I assume on a fresh win install you started with the 'official' video driver from dell and it still happened? I don't know what to suggest - anyone?

the only part i haven t replaced is the power adapter with the power supply but i am getting one soon.......oh and the ram but ram past all the tests(at least 3 :p).

i have to say that when i get my video card replaced my laptop problem was fixed temporary for 2-3 days i wasn t getting any bsod, but...... :(
but i believe that this happened because they have replaced me my heatsink and they have repasted it. the problem most of the times happens when the laptop card heats 65-70C, but i can t believe how the did happen when i was watching a video on Steam!

Seems to be a spate of similar problems

Your temps are fine but I did have a card that would hang the whole machine when it hit 73C - every time!

When you got the new card, dell always supply a new heatsink so they rely less on the skill of the engineer. It is already pasted and padded and all he has to do is screw it on correctly. There is a tube of paste in the box but the engineer I had told me that it was for use if he had to remove the heatsink. Dunno if that matches up with what they did for you but it would be real bad luck to have a second card go bad :(

Ram doesn't cause a consistent video driver crash so you're right there, very unlikely.

A faulty power adaptor could I suppose have a bearing if it is unable to supply enough power to drive the GPU at full speed? Not sure what happens to a machine in that circumstance but a BSOD is likely at the least...

Yeah I can believe it. If you still have waranty they should replace it after all the other stuff, just ask. They did for me and I got an upgraded R4 for my original R3 :D. Good luck..

i don t have warranty now .but the laptop was brought to dell 1 month before my warranty expired, so they will have to do replace it, in the worst case i can pay some money for the warranty

Yep, as long as the original problem was reported in warranty you should be fine, might be a good time to extend it anyway :)
