Hello everyone,
today I've got 580m GPU from ebay.
Tried to install it on my alienware but after turning on only thing I've got was 6 beeps(means gpu failure). Yes I know how to change GPU in laptops everything did ok(Iguess). Unfortunatelly I was forced to put back my old 460m on board(of course everything works with 460m).
Here is my question.
Upgrading 460m to 580m is possible on R3?
If yes I guess that GPU I've bought is broken and I need to sent it back.
My second question.
After I'll send back the GPU I want to swap my 460m to other nvidia card. I want to play GW2 on full details so maybe there is other nvidia option that would give me nice gpu boost. I have about 400 euro for new GPU. If I had a single, is there any option to get a sli?
Last question:
I have i7 - 2630qm intel CPU. Gonna swap it too for a better. What is a good CPU that would cost too around 400 euro and will be really nice? Or maybe there is a cheaper CPU that will allow me to play games on high settings.
Thanks evoq.

The M17x R3 supports the 580m, and it doesn't support Sli. It does seem like the GPU you purchased is broken though.
-
Have you tried uninstalling all the 460M drivers before installing the 580M?
-
I would reccomend you return the broken one grab a new Clevo GTX 580M as the Dell 580M has throttling issues.
EDIT: The CPU can be swapped, but a 2860QM (500 euros-ish) would give little gains and is not overclockable. I would recommend saving some money and buy a 2920/2960XM -
Thanks for advices.
No I didnt uninstalled drivers, I dont think drivers are the issue. -
Does it hurt to try? Usually when you install a new GPU, you uninstall all the previous drivers.

After reseting bios finally I was able to run system. But if I swap to PCI GPU(nvidia) system will work for about 1 min and reset. I have A07 unlocked bios(to turn off/on integrated GPU). Everything works gr8 if I turn on integrated GPU but if I turn it off, system boot, works for 1min and reset.
Maybe now its caused overheat? I only changed gpu from 460 to 580, nothing else.
Edit. Its not the heat cuz gpu turn off when it is about 64 degree.
Should I update GPU bios? -

Try updating to the m17x A08 unlocked bios. Maybe that will help. Did you apply thermal paste and such as well?
-
GPU temp 64 and it gets off then. -

hmm strange is it idling at 64C? That seems kinda high for just idling.
-
No, its temp that occur crash. Idle is 46 degree.
Edit. System bios is a08 unlocked now.
Do I have to update video bios after swapping from 460m to 580m? -

nah you should be fine. Have you tried the power throttle fix? That might have somthing to do with it.
-
No whats that?

Thanks but still its not my issue
Throttling is not the problem. Problem is that GPU after few mins just turn off
Maybe I need to change heat sink from 460m to 580m? There is a difference between those 2? -
I believe there is. You may need to remove the black tape on the inside of the heat sink. You may be running into the issue where the GPU die isn't getting full contact with the heat sink.

I've changed GPU bios, fixed throttling issue but those things didnt help.

did you try removing the black tape on the GPU heatsink? That black stuff outlined in red (pictured below) needs to come off. Had a similar issue due to the 6990m gpu die being different when I did my swap. don't know if there is a die difference between the 460m to 580m, but it doesn't hurt to remove the tape either way.

Don't think this is causing the issue, but I would suggest you cut down on the paste. Looks like your using 2x-3x more than is needed.
-
Earlier I had less paste and problem occurs so I've add some but that didnt help too.
Edit. I'm giving last shoot to driver uninstall and install again.
Edit2. Maybe system bios is the problem? Maybe I need to change bios settings after 460m to 580m? -
pay attention to the power supply is 240w and heatsink 100w , rather than75w for 460m

I have the same case, just that in my m17x R3, I upgraded to 580m from 560m. After removing the black tape and cleaning my heatsink, installing new thermal pads (like this: http://forum.notebookreview.com/att...-post-191-later-580m-thermal-pad-layout-e.jpg) and paste between the chip and the heatsink, I successfully started the system up. Geforce experienced noticed my card and its driver, and so did the msi afterburner.
Everything went well until I launced a game. After a few minutes of playing a game, I get the BSOD, and Geforce experience will say my 580m is not good enough for using the optimizing games feature, and sometimes, msi afterburner will say the temperature drops down to 0. I updated my bios to A12 (confirmed by seeing it in msinfo32), and did the Vbios mod for powerthrottling as instructed (which also is confirmed by nvidiaInspector), but nothing has changed. I can play for 5 minutes and then the BSoD occurs, and the card appearing dead sometimes.
This only happens in games, and it works fine when not having the gpu installed and just running with HD graphics 3000.
Could it be something as silly as the black tape between the chip and the heatsink that is missing?killeraxemannic likes this.
M17x R3 GPU upgrade 460m -> 580m
