I bought my M17x R3 last month, with a ATI 6990M and the integrated Intel HD3000 graphic card. I have no problem switch between them.

However, today when I start my computer, first I noticed that Win7 login page was in a very low resolution. I then reboot computer and then it seemed fine till I actually logged into win7. Here comes the problem:

1.The brightness was like 3 grades darker than normal, I now have to maximum the bar to reach my previous brightness degree.

2.I noticed that there was a icon to the left bottom indicating something similar like "Updating video card setting".

3.I right click on the screen and can no long find the option: switchable graphics. Even if I run this application from the Startup, it will not take me to that window which allows you to switch graphics.

4.I enter CMOS, it indicates that "Integrated GPU: Not Detected"

I tried several method but none of them works.

First I tried update the BIOS to the latest A08, then I tried to reinstall again the driver for Intel HD3000 but it says that my system does not meet the minimun requirement to install it.

I also tried to install the latest driver for the AMD H6990, and it fails too!

Regardless the failure of updating the driver of 6990, I am desprate about the fact that my Intergrated GPU just "disappear" without any reason! The system change that I can remember is a update of Alienrespwan yesterday and I run a Regiestration cleaning with Tuneup. But I don't think they are the cause of the problem.

    Please could anyone help me..

Looks like your GPU fried. Funny thing is mine did the same thing on Friday and I have had it less than a month. Booted up like normal and was like what is going on with my resolution. Checked the bios and had the same msg of integrated graphics1 not found. So I tried reseating the card but that didn't work but I did notice the card was extremely hot and the fan not moving.

Apparently from a few other posts that is the sign the AMD GPUs fry.

Waiting on the Tech to come out and replace my GPU.

    Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. Well what can I say..

However I heard that this intergrated GPU is part of i7 processor chipset, so they need to replace altogether with the CPU or is there a Graphic chipest on the mother board that can be replaced?

Anyway, wish you good luck too.

    Called technical support, now waiting.

Btw, in my case I use high performance GPU for 99% of the time. I never used integrated GPU for gaming, only for browsing internet or managing documents, and watching video for like 2 or 3 times.

As I did experience the change of brighterness, I suspect there is something to do with the mother board.

the 6990 gets pretty hot, you guys should consider buying thermal pads and paste once tech comes to replace it.

Don't worry, tech guys rarely know or care if you repasted.

Mine wasn't overclocked and didn't run that hot. Was in the high 70s so not sure exactly whats up. So Dell is out of stock on 6990ms and GTX580ms but they are sending me a 460m to replace my 6990m till they get cards in stock.

He said the other cards are out of stock, so they will give him a 460m until the other cards are in stock. A 460m is better than having nothing while he waits.

Actually I am getting a GTX580 to replace my 6990m next week but the 460m is just to give me something till then. But I have a feeling there was a bad batch of 6990m or its just a manufacturing defect.

well intel had the sandy bridge recall earlier this year. AMD probably has a similar issue that they don't know too much about. Hopefully they recall it and send out fully functional ones.

Guys I am a bit confused. In my case my 6990 works well while it is the integrated GPU: Intel HD3000 unable to be detected by system. But from the above posts, correct me if I am wrong, it is the faulty 6990 which caused all the problem ?

Btw , I have a Coolermaster U3 running all the time (independent power supply) , the high performance GPU normally was around 64C-68C while gaming (wow) and maximum 72 C while playing Crysis2. Never overlock.

If you go into your bios. On the main screen what does it say for detected graphics?

Also in your device manager do you have 2 display adaptors listed?

Just a thought but have you manually switched between graphics cards? FN + F7 is to switch between Intel and Discrete(AMD in your case)

well in my case, in bios the Radeon 6990 is there while I am still using it playing games. The one that can not be detected is Intel HD 3000, that integrated GPU.

From the device manager, I can find also that 6990M only. I am unable to switch GPU for sure, as now my system has only that high performance graphic working.

maybe we r talking of two problem?

Btw, reported problem on Tuesday, still waiting for Dell technician for further instruction.

Carlo I am having the same problem, started up laptop and resolution + brightness was messed up reinstalled drivers and bios but no luck with hd 3000... has dell replied to you? and if yes any solution provided other then sending it back?

    Edit.

Uninstalling the ati driver completely followed by restart and changing bios settings to load optimal default fixed my problem! Brightness has restored to normal and integrated graphics are now detected.. Kind of odd as before this trouble had occurred I had only used ms office and then shut down..
