It's a 120Hz screen, in 2D or 3D mode.

oh for the ppl that didnt go for the nvidia 3d but still want 3d in the future there is hope
YouTube - 3D No glasses by Jonathan Post
I wonder when ATI get their act together and sort 3d out for their cards instead of all this 3rth party stuff
I would like 3d but i rather have a very powerfull card for it now so i dont have to upgrade after a few months again. Then again i mostly just play competively and 3d will prolly be just annoying then. -
It is a no brainer if you can live with the fact that you will never be able to get a 120 Hz screen... but those who buy a 460M, can get one and upgrade the card later.
-
great point +1 and for that i'll stick with the 120Hz screen and the 460m and as soon as i feel like upgrading to a more powerful card like the 485 i'll just do it
as simple as its
-
There are downsides to getting the 3D now and the 6970M later...
1) warranty coverage on the GPU.
2) battery life will suffer because the IGP is disabled with the 120Hz screen.
3) extra cost and you won't get to use 3D on the 6970M because the emitter is compatible with NVidia drivers only.
There are upsides for getting the 6970M now...
1) You get 5+ hours battery life.
2) You should be able to use an external 120Hz display via displayport.
3) You have the GPU power to drive an external 120Hz with great framerate.
Choosing is up to you. But, I really want the battery life and with my 4 year advanced warranty I don't want to modify my CPU or GPU. This way, if I want to resell in 2 years, I'll get the best resale value as well. -
Ok, i have about 2000 USD in my paypal balance, so have been any charge? can i pay with my international paypal account and ship to an US adress? or do i need a US paypal account? -
Can the 6970 output 3d via hdmi 1.4 to a 3d tv with a 120hz hdmi 1.4 input? or is that just the nvidia that can do that?
-
my clan account is dutch however 90% of my clan is from the Uk, however i dont know for sure if the US paypal is different.
Technicaly it shouldnt matter from what account u send the money from.
just make sure when u send the money u select the personal tab not the purchase.
Im not sure on how much shipping cost it will be for it to be send from the US to where u live tho, almost sounds like its cheaper to just buy one localy
sounds like alot of hazzle but yeh for me the prices on the US alienware webby are almost half of that here in holland lol
-
Regarding ATI, its possible to use 3rd party 3d but i hvnt a clue how that works out. It wont be a problem to drive a 120hz display via displayport and technicaly it should be able to send 3d aswell.
-
WOO! YEAH! FINALLY! OMG!
-
THAT IS FUNNY ! OMG! I needed a laugh today lol. I do hope people know this is a joke. now on to a real question;
If someone had an R3, and a Nvidia 485m... dose the bios support it? (can you put a 485m in an M17x R3?) Or would you need to do some bios update/flashing? -
although it doesnt seem like the 120hz screen is available with the 6970m option, unless u upgrade later on, right? atleast its not an option on my side...
-
i asked that earlier, and u would need bios update/flashing.
edit:so im guessing that is yes to updates ftw. -
sry, I did read the thread from pg.1 must have missed it. Drat! Well then... I am not to sure if I will be getting one of these, who knows when a bios "fix" to support a 485m will come 'round.
By the way, thank you all for sticking to the topic. real information on one topic is great, and makes for better reading/research than going through threads that fall off topic, and fade away without answers. -
In theory, but I'll wait until someone succesfully transplants a 6970M before I call it a definite possibility.
-
I believe this is the converter you need to support 120Hz. Someone in the M15x forum confirmed it worked with the M11x driving a 120Hz monitor. I'm not sure it was confirmed on a M15x. But, I see no reason why it wouldn't work on a M17xR3 with 6970M.

Personally I would not upgrade to ATI. I would wait until 485m or 560m or whatever. There is bound to be upgrades the the cards before Dell releases R4.
Personally I don't understand why people are worried about 5 hours of battery life. The m17x is not a computer you would use while traveling. So you will always have access to a plug. If you want a computer to handle text documents and web surfing... get a Mac Air, it has like 10 hours of batter life and is 10 times less weight. -
extra battery life does add more usefullness + more reasons to show off in public ;p
-
Well first off i'm new so hello everyone, second there ARE standalone parts for sale but prolly not for this laptop, RJtech sells some parts including laptop video cards for the clevo x7200, not sure if they would be compatable in any case because i've never had the pleasure to look in either of the laptops let alone both.
-
So I noticed something, might be small, but the 3d vision bundle has a 3.0 mp camera and the non 3d bundle screen says it has a 2.0 mp webcam.
-
I am trying to order and get a discount but I am not able to get one. Anyone can help me?
-
This $50 coupon can help you in a way.

yeah, i saw that too. i brought it up to one of the sales reps, but he said thats how they are made, (since i thought it might just be a typo), so im guessing they are stressing the 3d bundle ftw?

Here we go again on speculation, the bios is the exact same for all of the options so the bios is just autodetecting what hardware is in the laptop and enabling/disabling the appropriate options, there's no solid proof that the IGP will be disabled but the IGP will not run a 120hz panel set at 120hz. As for the 3D with the 6970 that's very true, hence the reason I'm waiting for another Nvidia card. As far as a laptop 2 years from now as long as you hang onto the original parts and don't damage anything your warranty is the exact same. On the bios note unless someone can find the notes on supported hardware on the current bios or disect it for the code we won't know until it's tried or official, I have a feeling the code for the 485m is probably already in there as it's looking like the 485m will be a reality in the rig at some point. Just like the M15x already having bios support for the 460m long before it was a thought.
-
Thanks but there used to be team blackhawk that got me many discounts in the past like 12% on new systems but they are gone.
There is no way I am buying a full priced system. -
is there any noticeable power difference between 2630QM vs 2720QM?
-
shouldnt be a difference, if there is, its a small one. the bigger difference would be when comparing the two different GPU's
-
This one? Dell - Meet Your Friendly Sales Agents - Team Blackhawk | Dell Oh, 12% percent would be a big help on us.

Yep that one but I am not able to contact them anymore.
-
I've just had an idea over the whole 'optimus disabled with 120Hz' problem.
If I remember correctly, my desktop (with an nVidia GPU) had an option in the control centre to change the refresh rate of the screen.
Couldn't you set the refresh rate of the screen to 60Hz, and then use the IGP? (Of course, 3D would be disabled as long as it was on 60Hz, but if you needed the battery life temporarily...) -

The only thing I would like to see is the difference between the 2820qm coming in yours and the 2630qm in mine, aside from that it's all the same as mine. Awesome rig, congrats!
-
I have contacted the team blackhawk member from which I had ordered my R2 and he says they are no longer able to give out any discounts. They are now aligned with online prices and I can only get a discount if I have a coupon or I am part of a company/association (ex. Boeing, Military) that offers discounts.
Do you guys think that is true or complete BS? -
It's just a flat 13% difference in clock speed. Totally not worth the extra money.
-
I don't normally reply to opinion comments, but here is what I got; "Meh, money is money... but power is power" *evil grin* "It has a 8MB Cache over the 6MB Cache too"
-
No. A tech from Dell explained that the IGP is disabled completely due to the fact that the LVDS input is rerouted from the GPU instead of the IGP when a 120Hz display is detected.
Ideally, there should be a BIOS setting to disable 120Hz / enabled IGP. But that options is not available and there was no hint that it would ever become available.
This is the primary reason I returned my original R3 with 3D and re-ordered today with the 6970M. -
For those that have used the 3d, is it worth it? Also I think the point of the 6970 is not the 300 fps it gets in old games, it's to be able to play the newer games at 30+ fps. I'm just wondering if the 3d aspect of the 460 makes up for it's subpar performance (comparitive to the 6970 and older R2 options).
-
That was also confirmed by an nvidia employee here, in the thread dedicated to this topic (120hz IGP disabled). I was also refused when asked to ship the 3d package that I paid for and did not get by a dell engineering team member. He said exactly the same thing and noted that 3d will not work even with the 3d capable GPU, emitter, glasses, and 3d capable screen.
Even though I confirmed that the guy really was a system eng, I still say it's hearsay until someone tries it for themselves. -
Good to know!
-
Holy crap, FINALLY! I woke up late so I wouldn't stress over this like the past 2 days...
Wish I didn't now, LOL. -
Finally decided on the laptop. Got the black with 2720, and 6970.
-
got mine.......2720, 460m, 8GB RAM, happy days
-
So i have a question, would a clevo x7200's 485m fit in here? Idk why they would have different form factors but then again i'm WAY more versed in desktops than laptops (for now).
-
If the code was not in the BIOS, what would it take to revise the BIOS with the appropriate code. Making the observation that there exists an Intel SB i7 / Nvidia 485m combination available, e.g. Sager, Malibal, etc., I am assuming that there are no compatibility issues hardware wise for the 485m.
-
For gamers, the 2820QM and 2630QM will deliver the same framerates, at 1080p. What exactly are you paying extra for, when you won't ever see a difference?
It will fit, but it might not work properly. -
Alright, on the phone now trying to get $300 lopped off.. If I do its 8gb/2720/5970/256gb ssd, etc.
-
cheers yo ya'll new fancy R3 owners
Hope you guys 'll love what ya get there! -
So if it fits does anyone want to try to put one in and see if it works? This ofcourse if i had a clevo and an R3 i'd do it myself but i'm not nearly as blessed as that.
