Yes, I even hooked up my cable box to it for fun... Worked good when I messed around with it, although I didnt use it extensively.
Also I haven't had any problems with the audio-out via the headphone jacks with my gaming headset.
Can anyone tell me if I should be enabling Vsync (and triple buffering?) in games with the 120hz screen? Someone pointed me twords a toms hardware article but I cant seem to find it, thanks in advance.
-
Yes it's true! This will be my first alienware rig and the hdmi input alone sold me.
-
Wow, thanks for the info on both...honestly both are hard to believe after my M15x hissed and crackeled, and I've never even HEARD of HDMI input on a notebook before!
So that's really, really cool.
Dang, I was pretty much set on an Envy 17, but now I'm thinking about the M17x again... -
please stay away from the envy 17! I owned one for an hour and immediately took it back! I settled on the M17x R3, so If you can afford one please do yourself a favor. I tested the 3D at ces for the r3 and it was very impressive, but the envy 17 did not present well. You can youtube some reviews on the envy 17.
-
Yea, that was pretty much the main reason I've decided on this laptop despite it being more expensive then some others.
I've been hoping for a laptop to have it that works without any lag and this is it. Along with 3d my money is set on this. -
Seconded, mine lasted 3 hours before it was returned. High end my as$.

I'm not finding this
-
The Canadian site now allows orders for the M17x....but only the 460 and 6870 video cards are listed. This is a little disappointing.
-
I plan on getting it with the 6970 card. But I'm wondering if they will be adding the XM processors for this deal soon? If it is I'd rather wait.
-
And the configs, as usual, are more expensive. Time to call on an Amerifriend.
-
So I got bored and called Dell up asking them when the alienware R3 would be posted in UK. After 3 times I got moved from one place to another. I got to this indian lady and we talked about what I wanted.
She went straight to the specification and I told her the R3 with the i7 2720QM, 8gb RAM, Home Premium, normal drive, 120hz 3d bundle, Alienware headset, 2 year warranty, bluetooth, blu ray aroud 3000 pounds. Although I might just take out the ssd to make it even cheaper(which I did)...it's also thanks to the student discount I got from her as well.
She gave me her number and now she is going to call me again to see I'm ready to buy it.
She did say that it will be one month lead time.
I'm glad I'm Indian that helps as well.
Kind of happy that instead of waiting for UK website(which might take a week) I called instead. -
1 main reason with going with dellware is due to there financing option. I don't know any other vender that has this option.
-
A mod changed the title. It's a typo for sure.
-
I'd get that deal. I had the same with 3 yr advance and no blue ray for 2322. I'd love it if you could pm me the rep who gave you that, which I assume is EPP?
-

Why is "6870 and 6890" in the thread title?

Anyone living in England you should give them a call instead of waiting for the Dell Uk website to show the R3. -
A mod maybe made a typo.
-
I called Dell Support to see why my order wasn't showing up under my account when I login and while he was fixing that he gave me free Overnight shipping (I had free ground shipping). I wasn't complaining about anything or asked for anything in return so maybe you guys can also get Overnight shipping for just calling him up and asking a few questions about your order status

WHAT deal?
(And hey, where's Joker? Isn't he going to be buying like his second system for 2011 by now?
No seriously I kid, he's great)
What didn't you guys like about it? I'm assuming the cooling is worse, but adequate. Otherwise it's missing HDMI in and 160 cores + Nvidia option, but IMO does look nicer/less conspicuous.
Like I've said, I was pretty much set on an Envy 17 because people there say it doesn't have headphone jack audio issues, while a lot of Dell systems do...only now you guys have said the Envy 17 does and the R3 doesn't, of course leaving my confuzled
That really is amazing...how does it display it? Like...is there some special program you run and then the input pops up inside it? I love the idea of being able to plug a Playstation or Xbox into it, and have access to basically ALL games in one device!
Heck, the NGP will probably even plug in to it.
Or heck, it would even be handy potentially for plugging my other work computer into it, so that I can get both my notebook and work computer's display on the same display!
(Because it disrupts the GPU, I can't use Remote Desktop anymore to have my desktop system displayed as part of my notebook's output.) -

zippys007- delete that info, the mods will come along and delete it for you if you don't, you're not allowed to post personal contact info on the open board. Just change it to something like "pm me for my reps info" or something along those lines. Can't post full names, phone numbers, emails, etc.
-
You just connect the hdmi and it does it by itself. Here is a youtube clip:
YouTube - Alienware M17x R3 - HOW TO WORK 3D? & ETC.
Go to around 3 min then watch it's small clip though for it. I agree I have a PS3 and since I have to move around a bit I could not get a TV. This solved it for me. -
Wow...thanks...yeah, there is is, it really works! Guess it must not be using a separate program per se, just hardware based, which really is better.
Hmm...that's a REALLY unique feature that I've known a lot of people have wanted over the years. -
Decided to just get this instead of waiting for a better config. Got the 6970/SSD and everything else maxed out. Do they make a docking station for the r3 or is it just a port replicator?
-
congrats, I would do it as well If I were not picky with my money xD (and I am still fine with my g73)
How much does it cost your configuration?
PS
someone edit the title topic, ADM 6890 does not exist xD -
Pm'ed batboy with that problem. A mod changed the title and made a typo. No big deal with that.
EDIT: WOW. I didn't know that I can change the title of the thread. I thought only mods can change it. Well, It's fixed now.
EDIT2: DOH. I thought I could change it. It only change the title of the reply, But not the Title itself. -
Just to ask...(if anyone who has an R3 could confirm this, I'd appreciate it)
Does the HDMI in also carry audio? So that it plays through the laptop?
And, if so, can you run a USB headset with this audio input through the laptop?
(Specifically, I'm wondering if my Logitech G35 headset would work with audio from the consoles through the HDMI in) -
It supports audio in, since I saw it in a video, someone playing their Xbox through it, but I don't know what the rest means.
-
Title changed to:
M17x R3 RELAUNCHED! (w/460M/6870M/6970M)
The US site has the 6870 and 6970 GPU options... This is why they were included in the title. -
Thanks for fixing it Batboy.
-
Just joined the r3 club, nothing special.

everything else stock. -
Got some questions peeps... If it's the gtx 460m 3d version 120hz, does it mean that you are force to play at 120hz all the time in 3d or can you turn off 3d and play it normally like you are playing on a regular 60hz w/o the 3d?
If it cannot be turn down into 60hz and will stay at 120hz, if the 3d is disabled, will the 120hz reduce performance compared to 60hz when playing normally w/o the 3d? -
With the 460/3D Bundle (aka 120Hz display), the display can also be set for 60Hz - but why would you want to? Yes, 3D can be disabled and you can still game @ 120Hz
-
I asked earlier with no response, did you get this through EPP for $2410? I'd do the same deal if I could get that price, please PM me.
-
Since you mentioned that the 460/3d version can be set to 60hz, does it mean we can get the 4-5 hour battery life from Optimus?
-
oh my bad spent the whole day wheelin and dealin, hahahhaha
yeah i went through epp for it.
sorry couldn't pm you. you don't have enough post yet. -
Some reported that they got more battery life from the 6870's rather the optimus from 460m.
-
No. 60Hz on the 3D is still using the 460M and not the IGP which is disabled. I got around 3 hours max.
-
The official tech specs page from Dell lists the weight at 11.68 pounds as well as no mention of any bluetooth functionality. Hopefully those are wrong.
-
how many speakers does this thing have? does it have a subwoofer? I wonder how it sounds compared to mine.
-
I am 99.99 percent certain folks who had the R3 in their hands mentioned a weight a tad over 9 lbs...
-
i hav a x8100 with sli 285 and i hav some one rdy to pay me 1600 for it would it be good to do it and get the R3? ty in advance
-
Depends on what equipment you have. If you have the 940xm and gtx480, I dont see that much reason to dump it. Unless you really need the faster processor. Remember the R3 doesnt have an extreme processor yet.
-
He says he has SLI 285's.
-
I just caught that, missed it first read.
Still depends on what proc, but gtx285 sli is pretty good stuff.
When AW brings out the extreme procs, that will make the decision easier to trade in. Second gen i7 E-series and Dells warranty FTW. -
I just cancel my previous order and re order it through the EPP XD
I managed to got a fair amount of discount..same specs with 3 year basic plan it comes out to be $2,196.20
I just can't describe how awesome my EPP sales rep was..If you guys are students at college or university, pm me and I will give you his detail..I promise you wont be dissapointed.. -
Now if only the E series was remotely worth the price, ah well. I7-2720QM is the only worthy upgrade if you need VT-d otherwise you'll never see a notable difference in the $1000 difference
-
I'm still confused, how are people getting these deals through EPP? I just see the slight discount.
-
if you are a student at college or university, or if you are currently working @ company like boeing, etc, then simply give them a call at 1 800 695 8133.
I can give you the direct extension of my awesome EPP sales rep (he said he will be able to give good discount to my friends), but I dont know if I'm allowed to put it up here or not
-
I was looking forward to buy Asus G-series when GTX 560M arrived but due to bad design on the new G74 and a lousy performance boost with 560M vs 460M (if it was indeed the 560M they tested), i am considering buying alienware for the first time
Few questions here:
1. How is the noise in Alienware notebooks? Some hardcore notebooks had 2 GPUs right? So what noise level should we expect from the M17x with 6970M now that its only 1 GPU? How is alienware notebooks in general compared to G73 (noise)?
2. Any news about M15x R3? And when it arrives, will it feature 6970M or do it require bigger casing?
3. I have seen some member here at this forum posted videos of him pressing the keyboard down and it showed great deal of flex. Was that because of camera angle or is it indeed an issue?
Thx
