right so all I really understand I need to getting a:

    Au Optronics B173Hw01

but all this v4, v5 stuff is shooting way over my head. All I want is the best screen Alienware would naturally provide if I were buying the laptop today.

Also where would I get one from? I'm from the UK...

    Finally,

I've found this: Au Optronics B173Hw01 V0 17.3" Laptop Screen from www.accupart.co.uk Europes no 1 supplier for quality laptop screens

but its a v0.. err can someone tell me what the difference between this and a v5 would be?

    Thanks all!

cheers man, thats helpful and that screen seems considerably cheaper then the Au Optronics. I think i'll speak to alienware and see if they can tell me the make and model of the part.

It seems they've used a few different screens for these lappy's...

well ultimately the V4 or V5 are the screens to go for it seems. I've found a rather nicely priced v4 on ebay with the seller only a few miles away from me. I think im just going to go for that...

So Id love to know the difference between the LG and the AU Optronics. My replacement has the LG monitor and my old defective unit which I still have not sent back yet has the AU Optronics B173HW01 V5.

I don't really see a huge difference in color here if I'm honest.

Only the AUO v4 has 95% gamut and is truly amazing. Your v5 us 72% which is the same as the LG. There should be no difference between them.

So the AU V4 is the good one. That's good to know. Shozuki got lucky then if he's picked up a V4

Hm I don't trust that. They might just send you a generic one and claim that they no longer have the good one in stock. Also changing the screen in the R3 is incredibly difficult as it requires a solder or glass cutter to open up the display assembly and will most likely damage the default panel that it came with.

I would cancel the order if I was you or at least contact them to make sure you will get what you want. If you want I could PM you a UK reseller that guarantees you get a V4.

pretty angry. The seller whom I messaged after purchasing the item now tells me im getting a v0 which in his opinion is the same thing.

clearly its not and is considerably worse.

    quite frankly im quite irritated.

Did you buy/pay through ebay and comply with all of their policies for buyer/seller protection?

If so you've got every right to kick up a fuss and get a refund as it's not the item you bid on.

    EDIT- forget that, the listing clearly states;

"If the exact model becomes unavailable we may send you an alternative 100% compatible lcd."

yeah, the seller kicked up no fuss and was happy for me to send the item back and get a refund.

What irritates me more is that I called the seller first to confirm it was a genuine v.4 BEFORE purchasing, so consider me pretty hacked off.

On the plus side my real v.4 arrived today courtesy of this seller:

eBay - The UK's Online Marketplace

so its still very well priced and genuine, so im a very happy chappy - I just need that guide to install it...
