So i posted this issue in networking but then i had an idea! So i have a belkin wireless G adapter and it works in every computer i put it into except my m17x when i plug it in to my m17x it comes up as unknown device so weird its not a driver issue because in all other computers it works!

Note: all other computers are running the same exact OS

So could it be my usb ports or is something else wrong?

sounds like a driver issue to me. Do you have a disk that came with the adapter? If not, go to the belkin website and see if you can find the driver. ;)

Try using a normal thumb drive see if that works to test the USB port. also try A different usb port if you have not all ready done so. If all the usb ports are working fine go to your device manager and try doing A driver up-date for that device make sure you are on-line.

oh dear, last time this happened my mobo had to be changed,

have you tried all the ports... for me (if i recall it accurately) the port was the USB 2.0, distal to the screen .... apparently whenever i connected my printer it would come up as an unknown device.despite installations, and driver updates...i found out after a few days, that it was an isolated issue, and it was indeed the port that had gone bad

betg, didn't your laptop come with wireless? Did you disable the onboard wireless before trying to get the external usb adapter to work. Could be a conflict between the two devices. Still don't understand why you are pluggin in an old wireless g device when you have a better wireless card built in

I assume that you've already tried the USB ports with a usb stick and it works

sorry for the late reply everyone yes the reason im trying to use my laptop and the wireless g adapter is because i am a network security major and we are currently running backtrack in VM ware and as everyone knows it changes how you computer connects to the internet. So to do any pen testing in an environment i would have to run the distro as a live CD but i would much rather run it in vmware!

    To answer everyones questions
    1. i have tried all the ports and they still come up unknown device
    2. it is not a bad port because if that was true all my other usb devices wouldnt work.
    3. all drivers are up to date did a full reinstall of my OS and all drivers just to make sure!

the thing that sucks is i cant get support from alienware nor belkin because they are both blaming each other so

You have another option...If the Belkin is giving you issues and you don't want to run BackTrack live...grab a 4GB jumpdrive and use that to run BackTrack as a live distro.

All the benefits of a live cd/dvd with none of the drawbacks. :) Its not difficult to do and there are a few guides on the web, but your instructor should know how to do it. Really surprised it wasn't mentioned as an alternative to the live cd/dvd.
