    Hi,
So I just got my M17x R3 before yesterday and just half an hour ago, my ethernet would not work. I tried about 5 cables in my room using two different sockets (mine and my roommate's) and it wouldn't work. I went to the supervisor's room and tried connecting from there. It worked for 5 minutes then the ethernet socket failed there as well. Now he can't connect to the internet through his HP.

Is my Alienware causing ethernet sockets to fail ??

A buddy of mine here at work has an R2. He had endless problems with his wireless connection dropping out and coming back. He eventually pinned it down to his wired connection. Once he disabled that (even though he wasn't cabled in), his wireless started working perfectly. Don't know if you have something similar (in reverse) or not.

Sounds like a crappy switch at your office. Have your tech guys check it out.

Your laptop is not causing it to fail.

    Alright problem solved..

On campus, every ethernet socket has some sort of security trigger which activates upon detecting suspicious activity. I guess sharing my internet connection from my R3 to my Macbook air using ad-hoc was picked up as suspicious. The IT people re-enabled my socket after I explained what happened. Thank god its not the R3 lol :)
