hey i currently have a m17x r3 with a i7 2860qm and a gtx 580m. i use msi afterburner and get pretty decent fps on high demand games even on ultra settings. i dont have my cpu overclocked whatsoever but is it worth doing? will it benefit me any? will get higher fps? i run normal at 2.5ghz with 3.6 ghz turbo boost, i would like to get in the 4.0 ghz though

As mentioned in the other overclocking thread from today, there is not much "overclocking" you can do to a non-extreme Intel CPU. All you can do is bump the BCLK up in a modded A08 BIOS, which even then most people can't even get a 5% increase out of it.

However, you should be fine with that CPU. I personally have one as well, and it works fine for me. Most games aren't very CPU intensive, the rely much more on the GPU.

I've been playing Crysis 2 for awhile now. I have the DirectX11 and HiRes Texture packs installed. I tend to OC my GPU to 735/1470/1570, it seems like the most stable and best performing I've tried out. I've got all the settings set to ultra, and I see pretty good framerates and very very few lags. You may also try running it at 1600x900 (blasphemy I know  ) if you want everything turned up like I do. I can barely tell a difference between 1080p and 900p and it makes it run a lot smoother.

I just fired up BF3 the other day, and frankly, with the OC I'm using, I haven't had a single issue at highest settings and at 1080p. I still need to play with it a bit more to really know for sure though.

yea if have my core clock speed any higher than 735 i tend to have alot of screen freezes and tears...i cant get crysis 2 to run at all ultra even with AA off completely and still get atleast over 30 fps. and yea bf3 runs really good for me as well i can get about 50 fps everthing maxed and with some AA on

Do the A08 BIOS if you have an SSD (A09 cuts performance to SATAII as opposed to SATAIII), do the modded A08 if you want to mess around in the BIOS a bit (most people don't have any reason to), and definitely do the fix I posted above so your GPU doesn't take a dive when it hits the mid-60's.

It's very easy to do all of them, and you can always flash everything back to stock with the downloads from Dell's website.

Hmm why would u want to overclock it? My r3 runs flawlessly without overclocked. I ran most games in ultra like bf3, skyrim, rage etc and dont see any lags in it ;)
