Hi guys. I have an R3 with a 2960xm and a gtx780m which I upgraded myself. Yesterday I saw some higher Cpu temps (90s) so I restarted and in bios selected "load optimised defaults". Now it won't boot. It gets stuck on the klipsch sound screen and I can't even enter bios setup.

I'm thinking this is some weird conflict with the upgraded gpu. Any way of fixing it? Preferably without taking out the gpu?

    Thanks in advance.

Sounds like you may need to clear all of the power from the system, remove the CMOS battery, and basically reset it.

Let's hope it's an easy fix.

That's intriguing. do you have a 120hz display?

The usual way of getting a non-approved GPU to work in the R3 is an unlocked bios to be able to disable the iGPU. The 780m also has a history of messing up the R3's on-board audio :(. Yours seems a little different. The procedure for getting the on board audio working is kinda of a juggling exercise requiring disabling the audio in the bios and then re enabling it at a certain point with a driver install as well.

J95 posts the fix for this a few times ;)

Maybe you got lucky when you first installed the 780m with bios settings and now default is a problem?

    Try J.Dre's reset first :D.

    Good luck.

Thanks guys. Yes to clarify, I was using unlocked bios A08 previously with no issues. After taking out the CMOS battery, essentially it started the usual beeping routine so at least it unfroze itself from the first splash screen. I had to remove the GTX 780M in the end and reinstall the modified GPU drivers/inf file. Everything now works as it should again including sound.

The only issue is that using MSI afterburner, I am now unable to tweak the GPU memory settings, I can alter the core clock fine but with memory, whatever I set it to (under or over the zero value), it doesn't take! Any ideas?

Glad that worked. Sometimes the littlest things can be a huge pain in the (you know what).

MSI Afterburner isn't allowing you to adjust frequencies most likely because of the video driver. Try uninstalling and reinstalling it, again.

Thanks again J.Dre, almost reinstalled drivers again but after a couple of restarts, all seems fine.

Micky, it is not a 120 Hz display. I now need to find a better way to cool my 2960MX.

Coool, you've got there, the main thing.

Have you tried the 'Run As Administrator' option for Afterburner. I have seen some people not be able to change their mem settings until doing this - but they were using NvidiaInspector so may be a false trail...

Yes MSI AB seems to request to run as admin as a default. Am now able to set memory overclocks. It seems that it doesn't like using the sliders but if you type in your overclock manually and then apply, it works.

You could probably use some better thermal paste and raising the bottom using a notebook cooler or some books should fix your heating issues...
