So I've googled around a bit and it seems many people with Alienware laptops have experienced this problem of the laptop just showing a black screen when the user opens the lid to take it out of sleep mode. Few people seem to have found solutions, though. This only started happening to me when I upgraded to the 9.003 driver provided by Dell. I have tried reinstalling the driver (which was a bit of a hassle because Windows initially automatically downloaded some generic, wrong driver as soon as I uninstalled the official driver), but it didn't help. The problem occurs whether the laptop is using the AMD discrete gpu or the Intel integrated graphics. All I can think of is to maybe flash the BIOS, though I am not keen on doing that as I've never done it before and it appears that some of Dell's BIOS updates can only be installed with a DOS-bootable USB flash stick or whatever.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Specs:
i7-2820qm @2.3 GHz (stock)
16 GB RAM
Radeon 6970m (and a 60 Hz non-3D display, if that helps)
256 GB SSD
BIOS: A04
MS Windows 7 64-bit
EDIT: to clarify, the problem is that the laptop just shows a black screen when taken out of sleep mode (thought the keyboard lights up and the fans turn on).

By any chance, did you started a thread on Dell Communities as well?
I would say update BIOS to:
Driver Details | Dell US
then
Driver Details | Dell US
and finally
Driver Details | Dell US
Also make sure the video drivers are the latest from AMD (you can test those, is fine).
But more importantly, make sure the power settings on your computer are set to High Performance. Thank you -

Happened to me when I had my 560M installed, and still doesn't resume from sleep when using the 670MX that I have now. Always just a black screen when trying to resume from sleep. The fact that this is common across NVidia & AMD makes me think this is something more to do with the M17xR3 as a whole than any specific card or driver associated with that card. I was never able to fix this problem - although it doesn't bother me because I don't really need to use sleep.
(A clean Windows 7 install didn't fix it either). -

IT only works on certain driver versions, you will need to use different driver versions to get one that has that feature working or use the DELL drivers only.
M17x R3 doesn't wake up after 9.003 driver install
