I recently did a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 on my M17x R3. Lately, it randomly starts performing very slowly and for seemingly no reason.

I can have nothing but a couple Google Chrome tabs open and suddenly the laptop will become very slow. As in I could try to open a new tab or close out of a window and it would take 10 seconds to respond to my action. Other times the laptop will perform as normal. There doesn't appear to be anything specific that triggers these periods of bad performance.

How would I go about seeing what is causing this and/or fixing it?

That's a sign of the HDD/SSD failing. My old Compaq Presario sr1020nx desktop had exactly the same problem a few years back after heavy use. It was later found out that it's HDD was on it's way out to meet the reaper.

Get your data off it fast, and buy a new one.

Do you mind running HDTune (the free version is ok) in Safe Mode? Run the benchmark and the Health test.
Post the results so we may evaluate them.

Could be any possibilities stated above but since you just did a reinstalled of windows I'm leaning towards of how things were installed and running. Programs, drivers, or just windows itself bugging up. If nothing seems obvious, I would try to reinstall windows and its proper drivers even in a certain order.

I had this issue on my R3... does it get like SUPER slow, like your cursor barely moves, or makes a buzzing type noise? Turned out to be bad RAM.
