I am converting MKV files to MP4 files for my ps3 now. I am a little worried something is wrong. Last week the cpu overheated and shut down the laptop while enduring 100%load across all the cores for about 15minutes. Now I need to convert 1 file instead of 16 and it uses 80-95% of the total power + AMD app (like CUDA).
All the cores of the CPU got 93 degrees in 6 minutes. I think this is way too high. Also you feel a lot of air coming from the GPU side of the laptop (gpu keeps cool) but you feel nothing at the cpu side while it is 93 degrees. Is the cpu cooler supposed to be so underpowered? there comes hardly any air from the vent. It is not because of dust because I checked and cleaned that already.
Any suggestions and experiences?

Well, I've got the 2720QM in mine as well, and it doesn't even hit 80 in IntelBurnTest... You, my friend, have a problem.

I'm relieved this isn't normal but at the same time I am worried because something is really wrong in that case T.T
I wonder if the fan is even spinning. Do you feel the air stream from the cpu cooler?
edit: The fan is spinning and the cpu is idling on 50-55 degrees C. -
Have you cleaned the heatsinks ever? Or repasted? If not that would be your first step.

I get the feeling something is blocking the air in the vent. I have opened up the notebook before and sprayed compressed air all over the heatsink and the fan. Didnt look like there was a lot of dust in there. I guess I have to get the whole heatsink off and repaste + clean the whole thing. Yayy I'm so excited....

Call dell, tell them it's defective (or if that doesn't work, run IntelBurnTest and MAKE it defective lol) and have them relpace/repaste/whatever it. As it isn't really your fault...
-
So i guess that is a no... Well the spray air will not get out large build-ups, so yes clean them.

My laptop no longer has warranty since I bought it last year mid October, and even if I had warranty I wouldn't feel comfortable with breaking my own notebook on purpose. I know exactly how to do everything but the problem is, I'm super busy at the moment. I just hope I didn't damage the whole thing already because I play a lot of high demand games...

well I did a repaste+some cleaning it was a mess and the thermal paste looked more like industrial glue lol. Now with all cores 100% converting 8 files at the same time it doesnt even hit 80 Degrees after 15 minutes! Difference of 20 Degrees! I'm so happy
. thanks.
