according to the review from laptopmags, tuesday. That would make sense in a way since they just released the xps17 3d w/sandy bridge.

I know 3d is supposed to be a "gimmick" but I still wish the 6970m was guaranteed 3d compatible :( I mean, 3d cuts the fps in half, and the 460m is kinda a mediocre card, so wouldnt it make sense to offer the 3d r3 with a beast card? Just my .02

I thought they were going to add the 485M? That's a beast.

Maybe later on AMD will release a 3d package for compatible cards, and Im sure 6970m is one. You can future proof it with 120hz screen. But I doubt that they will sell it with that screen.

    :
That's only speculation currently. Plus, the 485M is like 5% better than the 6970m, which can be fixed easily with a lil overclock/right bios/etc. And the 485M cost several hundred more.

I wish they would let you at least get the 6970m with the 120hz screen :(
I may try and talk a rep into allowing it, because supposedly it is allowed in the manual.

Well, your pricing is speculation as well. :) It's highly likely that the 6970M will be cheaper - by how much is unknown.

5% better - it could be more, it could be less. The drivers were likely not as optimized.

Bunny, your perception (like most of us) must be narrowly skewed by benchmarks and overclocking graphs and threads. The nVidia 460m is not "kinda a mediocre card", but rather a high end GPU, just not at the tippy top of the highest tier. It plays current games on ultrasettings perfectly fine on highest resolution with rare exception. The new 2nd generation iCore 7 cpu's and sandybridge help this as well. Additionally an extra 15 to 20% OCing overhead has been shown in this configuration just for the 460m.

Again, 3D is no gimmick either. Depending on the game, its the real deal but still waiting for the killer dedicated game. While I would not trade in my current non-3D laptop just for 3D, it is more than nice for both future proofing and new spin on current titles in your game library not to mention 3D blueray DVD movies.

100% agree Dr J, there has been tons of talk of the 460m being a "mid level", "mediocre", etc card and it isn't. Unless you're doing nothing but chasing benchmarks or have to have ridiculously high fps on ultra settings then it does just fine, I've yet to run into any game(other than Metro 2033 and Crysis) that it can't absolutely max out with very good frame rates. Now do I think they need to offer a 485m in it? Yes. But the 460m is still a good card either way.

i will use your quote to tell you why you need the 485m

I've looked and looked, where exactly do you see on the LaptopMag review that it will re-queue up on Tuesday?

I'm sitting here with a pristine 740/8g/RGBLED/250gb/5870x2 that I was able to snag before the coupon deal expired, but honestly the fan thing just killed me. Of course, they want the full 15% restock on it but will waive it if I buy something else. So I'm kinda between a rock and a hard place on when they put the R3 back up.

Luckily I'm back on the 1730 chugging along just fine.

btw, if a moderator can kindly let me have access to more than just posting replies. I've been watching these forums since the XPS Gen 1>2>1710>1730..

Heh, I've got myself into a problem because of Dell/Intel. Sold my desktop last week or the laptop and I don't want to ship it until I can AT LEAST order the laptop.

Thankfully my buyer is flexible and understanding as he was originally going for a sandy bridge system too (this is a 1366 now)

I think I might go for the 6970 if I see it simply because I want the extra performance (I'm coming from 4.42ghz i7, 6gb 2000mhz, 2x EVGA 580 in SLI) but I *REALLY* dislike ATIAMD's drivers.

Are they any better than 10.0-11.0? I used them when I had crossfire 5870s before the 580s and they were godawful, I vowed to never go ATIAMD again.

I'd die to get a 485 in the system, though... I really like it's performance and I love how Nvidia handles their drivers... I HAVE the money to spare. Come on Dell!

If you're not married to Alienware, you can spend about $2k and get a really nice Sager/Clevo laptop with a 485M and Sandy Bridge i7 quad.

True sk3tch but you also lose: build quality-even the R3 is better built than the Clevo's I've used IMO, warranty support- if something goes wrong be ready to be without a computer for at least a few weeks with Clevo/Sager, with AW it's most of a couple days and you keep it the whole time.

Thanks Kat, Didn't even think of that on posts, I've been lurking for quite some time.

Looks like my drivers were completely fubar. Did the 11.2 thread and cleaned them out, started over and Rift runs like a dream now.

Back to the original thought, I'll be waiting Tuesday morning 6a cst for that Alienware website to update with the R3 :)

I'm not completely set on Alienware but I am set on the fact that they'll send people out to fix / repair your system if its under warranty.

Sager, Origin PC, Maingear, etc don't seem to offer that.

EDIT: Also worth noting that they're still "ETA March" everywhere, Assuming Alienware comes out Tuesday they're sort of lagging behind.

I really need to order something soon because I'm using a computer that technically isn't mine anymore.

Have nothing to do Tuesday so I'm really hoping to wake up.. Configure and then make a few phone calls and see if I can knock off a few hundred bucks :)

Lol you'll be waiting a while then RedEye, even if it does get re-released it definitely won't be at 6am, shoot they didn't put it up until like 9 or 10am on the original release date.

The Envy 17 3D with Sandy Bridge just went live this morning for order. This means that the Alienware M17xR3 can't be far behind. I'm guessing tomorrow or Tuesday.

    This in spades.....

Dell service and support is insanely good.

Watching a tech come calling and knocking at your door with a stack of parts and fixing your laptop(s) right at the table just rocks.

Yeah Dell warranty and service is THE reason I would buy Alienware vs any other brand even if the performance would be slightly less. Notice I said slightly...

Can't wait until I can order the R3 with 6970M. I hope to be the first one on the forum to get it... LOL

You ever dealt with any of the smaller(smaller than Dell at least) companies like MSI, Asus, Sager/Clevo, etc dookie? If you want to see some seriously screwed up policies on fixing really expensive laptops try one of them out, I'd knaw an arm off before I'd deal with companies like that again.

So is anyone seeing the R3 available for purchase on the dell site yet?

Don't see this anywhere on the Direct2Dell blog. PM me the specific link and I'll update the main thread. Lets continue to use the main thread for this.

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...sandy-bridge-issue-what-does-mean-m17xr3.html

    Thanks.

    EDIT:
Thanks to those who sent the heads-up. Lionel posted a reply and I was looking at his actual post which did not include this info. This is why I missed it. In any case, he was replying to a person asking when the 17xR3 was going to be put back up on the site. Here is what was posted -

Lets continue in the main discussion thread.

    Thanks.
