with the 6000 series being listed as compatible with AMD's HD3D technology, has anyone had the opportunity to hookup an M17x R3 with either the optional HD 6870M or HD 6970M gpu to an external display (ie: 3D lcd/plasma/dlp, AW2310, etc.) for any 3D gaming/movies yet?

I'll be getting mine tomorrow, but unfortunately I have a final on friday so I'll try hooking it up to my TV this weekend and trying 3D.

    Hi
I phoned AMD and they say that the 3d funtion is available on the mobile 6000m series graphics cards. They went on to tell me that some laptop manufactures disable the 3d feature. I contacted dell to ask if I could use a external 3d monitor/tv with my alienweare 17x r3 with the amd graphics card. And dell said that is compatable with external 3d monitor and feature not turned off. 3d funtion Not availble with the alienware screen built into laptop through...

I have 3D Plasma Samsung and also M17x R3 with spec in my signature. However, I am not sure how to test 3D on external TV as I dont see any option to turn 3D on in any game. Any idea? Do I need any software for this?

Update: I have tried it yesterday. I turned on 3D on TV, however cannot find any switch in graphic driver. Any clue?

I didn't get around to checking out the 3D as I don't have any 3D content but I will check when I can get a hold of a 3D blu-ray or something.

you can do 3d output even if the hdmi out isn't 1.4 on the m17x with the 6970 using iz3d.

If this is true, does it make more sense to get an R3 with a 6970 and buy and external 3d monitor ?

If they work together, then yes, so you can get a big tv instead of just playing on a 17" screen :)

is it possible to configure the m17x with the 120hz screen and the 6970 gpu? Not for the purpose of 3d but for the 120hz...?

No, that option is not offered. When you select the 120hz screen it forces you to take the 460m before your order can be placed.

Hoping for input from somebody about using the AMD card with external 3D monitor or TV. Anybody with experience on this yet?? Would like to know if it's actually been done, and how usable the AMD 3D is compared to going with nVidia 3D.

I have tried yesterday TDU 2 which has built-in 3D switch on Plasma 3D TV, however, it wasnt working. Picture was doubled, 3D looked as it should without glasses, but as the picture was not recognized as 3D it was therefore not correctly presented by TV - it looked doubled also with glasses.

apparently AMD's offering isn't going to yield much of a positive experience when it comes to 3D gaming (internal or external), which is why alienware uses NVIDIA's offering in their 3D setups. a good summary at guru3d. as for 3D movies on an external 3D capable display, it'll do fine...

so if you're into the latest gaming in 3D, NVIDIA's 3D Vision is the best choice as their technology is far superior to AMD's HD3D technology. keep in mind that most make the mistake of arguing against gaming in 3D due to it's adverse affect on frame rates, not realizing that (just as the PS3) it's supposed to be set to 720p when doing so. this keeps the pq and frame rates quite enjoyable...

    btw, for anyone interested:

    720p/30fps = 3D gaming
    1080p/24fps = 3D movies

I hope the AMD 3d is good for movies. I'm more interested in 3d movies than games at the moment.

I know this is an M17x thread but i think its close enough, as my sig show im running m18x with a 6970m crossfire 'my assumtion about a single card is that it will only make things more easier/more simple' . Just ran some tests my self and i can confirm that i am able to play 3d content. Played two different movies over an hdmi to a 3d sony bravia tv, worked just fine. Then tried playing crysis 2 in 3d, ran into some problems because the 3d option in the menu was greyed out. found a solution, just add "r_StereoSupportAMD=1" (without quotes) to the system.cfg file in the Crysis 2 directory, it enables stereo support, worked like a charm, can also confirm crysis 2 was played in 3d without problems. Then tried playing battlefield 3 in 3d but ran into a blackscreen even theough the tv would display "3d signal detected" but nothing from there. didnt have time to investigate, will report after i get more time.

This is cool. Does that mean I can try it with my single 6970?

I'm sure it will works just fine with a single card, in fact it should be less problematic
