As the title says, I cannot get my M17x r3 to boot from a flash drive. I picked up a Patriot supersonic xt yesterday and tossed xubuntu on it. It works in every other computer I've tried, including an R1 M15x, but it won't boot on my M17x. When I select to boot from USB, it just goes to a black screen and does nothing else. Any ideas?

Have you tried using the 2.0 USBs of the computer? Perhaps it's just the 3.0 that won't let you boot
On some computers USB 3.0 kicks in only when Windows boots and not until then -
I think what may be happening is that the drive is booting as it should, but you are not sending any information to the display. That is why the screen goes black. This will prevent you from running the bootable CD and wubi versions of Linux, too. It's not isolated to the USB flash drive.
Linux does not like the discreet graphics card. Once you have the Linux installed, you can update the driver. If you can disable the discreet graphics and use exclusively the integrated graphics on the Intel CPU you will most likely find success. I had the same issues with the M18x installing a Linux dual-boot config. Pressing FN+F7 and using the IGFX to start the process cured the problem. Once Linux was installed, the NVIDIA (had 580M SLI at the time) driver installation went off without a hitch. I installed the Linux discreet graphics driver while running on IGFX, booted into Windows and switched back to discreet graphics, then shut down and booted into Linux and viola, it worked. -
