guys,
will there be any problems if i get a OCZ vertex 3 ssd and install it into my r3?
i've read some threads that showed some problems with the vertex 2.
anyway, what im asking is, will there be any problems that i will face if i get a vertex 3, and install it into HDD port 0 and use it as my boot drive, and also DONT install intel's RST. while the default hdd goes into port 1 and i'll use that as my storage drive.
is there anything else that i should be looking out for?
thanks

put it in port 1 and use rst
-
dont understand, why install it in port 1?
-
Port 0 has problems. Install it in port 1 and use RST. Also aply the LPM fix or else the drive will freeze from time to time.
-
i thought the new mobo had already resolved that issue? or isit a totally different issue? and whats LPM?
-
it's an issue that hasn't got enough attention yet so dell hasn't even acknowledged it.
Port 1 rarely works as sata3 and vomits ATA errors for no apparent reason. -
so is there anyway to get the R3 to work seamlessly with the OCZ vertex 3? or would i be better off with another brand and model? or would that problem still persist with other SSD as well?
-
I originally got the vertex 3 due to lovely benchmark numbers. Can't install in ahci, has to be raid. Sometimes ssd hangs when windows loads. Seldomly I got a bsod for surfing the web. I loved the bragging rights numbers but ended up returning it for my current ssd.
Everything I mentioned above never happened with the new ssd. Not saying which is better than the other but if you want hassle free out of the box, I don't recommend the vertex 3 even after firmware update. -
i was looking at the vertex as well due to cost and performance. how is the 510 performing for you? are there any problems with installation and daily usage?
-
Nope, it works right out of the box. Installed in ahci mode, no freezing or crashing. Go figure, mobo and hd are both intel, you'd expect it to work, right?
Benchmark numbers aren't as fast as vertex but real life performance, I doubt you will notice unless you have a stopwatch in your hand at all times and measure in fraction of seconds. -
Get either M4 or 510 OP. Much more reliable
-
What cloud said. Price is all in the same ballpark.
-
Intel 510 or Crucial M4 currently the best SSDs, get one of them over the Vertex 3 cause Sandforce based SSDs are known to be very unreliable.
-
thanks guys, i'll check out which of the above 2 is the better one.
so all i need to do is install the SSD into HDD PORT 0 and install windows7 and all related drivers and i'll be good to go right? i wont have anything else to worry about? and just reformat the old 750gb hdd and install it into PORT 1 and i can use it as the storage drive? any formatting needed? -

If you are going for Crucial buy the 256GB version, more space and faster then the 120GB version. -
Same thing applies for all ssd. Bigger capacity is better performance.
-
I have the Vertex 3 in my system and have had ZERO issues, no BSOD's, no random freezing, etc. I did apply the LPM fix though.
-
My Vertex3 is doing fine too, but if I had to buy one now I would probably go for an Intel 510. A lot of people are having issues with a Vertex3 on the desktop Sandy Bridge platform so I'm not too sure if I'm not going to run into issues after a BIOS update e.g.
-
Issues are not there when you buy the drive, with the Vertex 2s the drives started to fail after a few months of use, same story with a couple of other SF based drives. Just based on history i would stay with non SF based drives for peace of mind.

whats this LPM fix?
M17x R3 with OCZ vertex 3,sata3 SSD
