I would like to know if I would be able to plugin a M17x R3 to three 24" monitors by connecting them to the laptop's HDMI, VGA, and mini display port. Since I have not received my computer yet, I have not been able to test this.

The video card that it will have in it is the 2G AMD.

    Thanks in advance :)

Hmm, this seems an odd request. I mean, the signalling standards and quality are very different between VGA and the other two. HDMI and DisplayPort are similar (both are designed to provide a high-quality digital link), but VGA is the old analog way. Wouldn't you rather use a video adapter to do it and keep everything digital?

Agreed, those Matrox solutions have gotten high marks for years. They first started designing and selling the multi-head external boxes about 8 to 10 years ago and have gone through multiple versions each building upon the features and performance of the past.

Not sure if you'll get high frame rate gaming with this sort of rig, but you can definitely drive three high resolution monitors with a single connection to your R3.

I can corroborate Deathcore's experience with trying to get more than two monitors running off of a single card in a laptop. It is usually, internal screen plus one other or two external screens.

I actually think Matrox adapters are complete armed robbery. With that aside, look at the following link:

YouTube - Alienware M17xR2 Proof of ATI Eyefinity with Bezel Compensation

This guy runs Eyefinity on his M17x-R2 (and crossfire disabled by the way). I see no reason why this wouldn't work with the 6000 series card the M17x-R3 has. Run a search in the forums, I think the guy is a member here.

That's pretty impressive! it looked like he was getting pretty good frame rates at 3600x1920 from a single 5870 ...

    Aren't our R3's 6870s and 6970s equipped with Eyefinity?

    Thanks for all the replies.

I just wanted to know if it would work. Using my XPS M1330, I was able to connect it to two monitors using the VGA, and HDMI ports. It was pretty much impossible to get the colors on both monitors to match.

I dont have a need to run three monitors right now, so I would not consider paying the money for a triplehead2go at this moment.

One thing that did not work was having the M1330 connected to two external monitors while the lid was open. Only one external monitor would work while the lid was open.

You should never consider buying a Matrox adapter. If anything, you could get one of those USB-to-DVI devices for $30 and connect an extra monitor via USB. It won't be the fastest thing in the world but beats $300 for the same thing...

Anyway, you won't really needed, as I mentioned earlier: the is no reason the 6000 series card on the M17x-R3 would not have Eyefinity.

    Good luck.

Well I tried using the HDMI, Mini DP and VGA for three monitorss but I was unable to do so. From what I have been reading and was told by AMD, in order to run three monitors with the 6970m, I need an active display port adapter. Since I have four monitors, I decided to use a couple of HIS multiview II. They are perfect for what I need.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

active display adapters are expensive. i had one for my Desktop and 5770.. they run about 100-120 and require a usb. Having a display port ready monitor works as well.
