Will be purchasing the 1080P screen, just wondering wether or not its worth a £160 more for the 460M.

    Which is better for gaming?

The 460 has same amount of cuda cores as a GTX260 192core.

    6870 is basically a 5870M which performs like a 5770 desktop card.

A 260GTX is better in desktop form that the 5770.

However in notebook form which would the better choice be for me?

Both of those cards perform at about the same level.

I would go for the 460M just for the increased memory in this case. Lots of games now have huge texture files which will eat up a lot of video card memory. Also, the built in physx processor is a plus, which both of the ATI offerings for the 17x do not have.

All around good performance with this card. Even with the most up-to-date graphics intensive games out there.

    6870 is a downclocked 5870M, either way I'd go for a gtx 460m... physx & cuda r good stuff.

Cuda is good for parrallel processing not gaming/ physx isn't in many decent games only ones are Arkham Asylum and Mirrors edge.

I want the opinion/ result based on actual average framerate performance.

physx is in several games, only way to see a benefit of this is with a seperate card dedicated to physx. I have a 6870m, it is a downclocked 5870 but Ive got mine well above stock 5870 clocks.

As long as you don't expect 60fps with extreme settings you're fine.

Still no answer of which is better or any proof of it, 6870 or 460 ?

Well i'm getting rid of my gaming rig which has a seriously overclocked 480 for this so I'd like to know what I'm jumping into first.

Honestly they both are about dead even. The 6870 is shown to have a slight edge. The 5850 has a little bit on the 460m, the 5870 even more so. So a downclocked 5870 is still better by a little.

The 460m does have advantage of CUDA and physx, which matters if you use them, less if not. If you are going 1080p 60hz, why not get a 6970? best bang for the buck, and LOTS of power (almost 2x 6870/460m)

Save your $$$ until you can afford the 6970m unless you want 3D, in that case buy the 460m with the 120MHz. Buying a lesser config than that is probably not a good value considering the overall price/performance ratio.

I think the 6970m is close to a HD6850 desktop card. I have a HD5850 in one of my two desktops and it is similar. I have not benchmarked them against each other though. EDIT: The 6970m has 2gb RAM vs. 1gb for the HD6850 desktop, so it is not exactly apples to apples.

My 6970m idles around 60c but is silent at that temp, I've never logged higher than 74c playing games because the fan speeds up and works pretty well.

I've read good things about replacing TIM, but have not tried it myself so will not comment further.

I don't have the courage to tear my baby open yet :)

If you've ever built your own system such as a desktop.

Like my previous, you get rid of the "breaking it worried" feeling.

But i understand what you mean.
