Please (seriously please) correct any ignorance on my part here, but could one not simply place any suitably sized/cut piece of material between the screen and keyboard, to avoid the unwanted effects?
Assuming that my (very simplistic) suggestion is ignoring a key issue, (vis-à-vis screen-keyboard interaction and, given the amount of discussion, dedicated to the topic, I must to assume this to be so), can anybody explain why such a simple solution (an arbitrarily chosen material) would not suffice for this purpose?
Any knowledge/advice/thoughts would be much appreciated

Its not really an issue of "This is easily solved" as much as it is an issue of "Why the heck is a $2000 laptop smashing its face into its own keyboard in the first place?".
Any of us could go and grab some rubber furniture protectors and pop it onto the screen but that doesn't change the fact that the machine has a (minor depending on how you see it) defect. Unfortunately I'm going to have to grab some aftermarket rubber

For anyone interested in protecting their system from scratches, I heavily advise shaggymac 17.3in screen protector. Got mine a few days ago, and it fits the m17x r3 perfectly (literally it covers it from one edge to the other). Someone posted a pick of the radtech cloth, and it provides much more coverage than that.
I do feel that this "shouldn't be a problem" on a 2k system, but it wasn't that expensive. -
This post made me laugh. I know, immature. So what? It's Friday
Also, Walmart/Joann's sells fabric for like $2 a yard or something for your favorite cartoon print fabric. Or, you can cut up an old t-shirt or something. -
I just noticed that I am having the same issue with my screen touching the keyboard and the trackpad. I was not sure what I was seeing at first, indeed it looked like oils from my hands being transferred to the screen.
No damage yet, but I asked my wife to find and cut an appropriately sized piece of fabric to place in the fold when I shut the lid. -
It's not a defect it's part of the design unfortunately...
When you have screens that have a glass or plastic in front of it the keyboard will always touch the screen. It happens on Mac's, it happens on pretty much any Alienware that has a front plastic. If it's just the LCD with no front cover then it doesn't touch

^^Great solution
Personally I will be buying a sheet of Lakers fabric or something. I'm thinking of just folding it like 2times over (2-ply) and sticking that in. Should be fine.
^Agreed. If Macs didn't have this problem, then neither Radtech nor Shaggymac would exist lol. -
I spent like $80 with RADTech, picked up 2 for my laptops, one for the gf's laptop, and some screen cleaner they recommended.

I just read up on the RadTach products. Are you going to use the ClearCal screen protector? Did you measure it out to see how close a fit it would be? I would hate to have to cut it to fit although my wife has all sorts of straight cutting tools for her crafting stuff, so I could do it.
I like that the ClearCal also adds some anti-reflective property to the screen, this thing is like a mirror sometimes!
KillerBunny also mentions the shaggymac 17.3 inch screen protector. I think I'll check that out as well.
For both of the screen protectors however, even if they are only 5mils thick, they still bring the screen closer to the keyboard making more permanent marks even more likely.
I guess I'd rather scratch up a $20 dollar screen protector than replace the $100 dollar M17x R3 screen cover itself.
I also had Moshi bag for an older 15" MacBook Pro which included screen protector that was a thin almost chamois like material to place over the keyboard when closing the lid for travel, was supposed to double as a portable mouse pad. Pretty effective as a screen protector. -
$3 @ Walmart for some fabric, I'm tellin ya
-
Yep, you are probably right dookie.
I need to do a better job reading some of the posts. I just re-read this thread and was confused about the solutions some folks were considering. Earlier I posted under the impression that folks were looking at a stick on clear plastic screen protector as an alternative to the cloth laying between the closed lid and the keyboard.
I like the idea of a soft cloth. -
If its part of the design then I have serious doubts about the usefulness of the little rubber spacers on sides of the R3.
I talked to a few Dell techs who said it was just flat out stupid that it touched in the first place. -
Yup. Or, you could grab an old tshirt. Only thing with old fabric is that you risk having specks or particles stuck to it that may scratch your screen.
You talkin bout those rubber thingies on the edges of the screen??? I can barely see mine. They're only noticeable if you run your fingers down the sides, but they're like 1/2mm high, so they don't have much purpose being there...
***Seriously guyz, a piece of fabric should do it. Leave the Radtech/Shaggymac stuff to the mac fanboiz. (They think they're better than others anyway, just cuz they can spend more than the rest of us LOLz) -
I like my RADTech
-
I think I can remove the rubber spacers on the side and put something under them to give them a few more mm of height. I may go and try it while I wait for my replacement LCD anyways.
-
Replacement LCD? What happened man?
-
There's dust inside and the top has a significant gap.

Just bought a Radtech customize sized screensaver. Hopefully It covers from media buttons to touchpad. My measurements are W: 15.5 H: 10.25.
Edit. Radtech cloth arrived.
My measurements was perfect.
