    Hello

My m17x r4, specs in signature, cpu is getting pretty hot, and it the cpu reaches 90C even when on a cooling stand. This is only when doing things like rendering, and gaming It sticks to around 75-80C.

Is this normal? Or is there something wrong. I got it repasted when the dell technician came to replace my keyboard, and touchpad. I can't recall it reaching these temperatures before.

GPU doesn't go above 77/78C when under full load, which still seems pretty high.

    Thank You

Was there any reason you had the cpu "re-pasted" when the tech changed the keyboard ?

Sounds like the heatsink may be not be making contact with the cpu correctly, I would remove the cpu cooler, check the TIM that the tech applied, remove it ( the thermal paste) and put some quality stuff on, then re-apply the heatsink.

I have a 3610qm in my M14x R2 and its never seen higher than 70*.

That's not unusual. I wouldn't be too worried about it. Almost every CPU I've encountered has reached 90C when rendering videos. It's a very demanding task, especially for a "lower-end" CPU like yours.

It shouldn't reach 90C... Call dell and have them send a tech to replace the heatsink and it should solve all the issues...

It's actually normal. When rendering, all of the cores and threads are used at 100% capacity, like a Prime95 test, which is completely different from gaming.

If it were reaching 98C or 99C, that's abnormal for certain. But 90C is completely acceptable.

Im rendering videos all the time. I had A17 and my max temp while rendering is 88C.
    I think thats normal.

Rendering does peg the CPU at 100% so high temps are expected but considering you CPU, it may need a better paste job, I've seen Alienware techs do absolutely awful ones so that is a consideration.

    You GPU temps are acceptable.

My CPU was hitting 100 degrees and after repasting it hasn't reached over 87...and that is with heavy benching and gaming.

Thanks for the responses. I'll get some decent paste and sort it out next week.

Sadly there are many other little issues with my laptop such as the keyboard surrounding seems to be loose - there's lots of give underneath the spacebar. and the fans are starting to get noisier - especially at idle. Can hear some sort of whirring sound which wasn't there before.

Hopefully it doesn't become anything like my previous XPS laptop. There have been several blue screens when I open videos, and seek through, it just crashes. These are videos on pages like facebook, youtube etc. I don't know if this is because I may have overclocked the gpu slightly but this was using the standard AMD Overdrive on the most recent stable drivers - 14.1. I have removed the overclock but I don't think this has helped. It's the official driver too. I ran the memory test, nothing came up.

I have warranty still, and I guess I'll have to call dell sometime soon. Everything was going sort of well after the keyboard+touchpad and casing replacement a few months back!

90 is pretty normal. You might shed a few degrees with IC Diamond or liquid ultra, but with factory or stock paste, its normal. I wouldn't be to concern unless it was around 100.

Alienware 17's with a overclocked CPU can use up to 75-80w under 85-90 degrees Celsius with a good thermal grease application. I'm sure of the cooling solution in alienware 17 manage and fix this
