I have heard that there are some hard TDP limits on the M17x r4 that do not allow for a stable overclock with an XM cpu. I read that it has something to do with the bios not changing the stock turbo limits regardless of what you put. Has there been any advances to this issues or workarounds?

Nope. As far as I know this was never fixed. My M14xR2 suffers from the same issue.

The good news is, the 3920XM and 3940XM should be able to hit at least 3.8Ghz on all four cores and be within the turbo limit. You should be able to hit 4Ghz+ on short turbo limit.

I am running 2920XM in my M14xR2 so I easily reach the TDP limit at stock clocks even. I am actually thinking of swapping my 2920XM and 3920XM from my M18xR2 to test this theory, but no time these days.

Its a shame we can't even use the full potential of it. I'm guessing a Overclocked 3840QM should be the equivalent of the extreme CPUs in this laptop at least.
