I recently found a heat reduction mod for the alienware that consists of making a rectangular hole that would allow the GPU heatsink pipes heat to exhaust out through the hole. Its hard to explain but here is the picture

I'm wondering if this is a good mod to do, or a useless mod. Let me elaborate on that. That mod would allow the GPU pipes to exhaust the hot air through the mesh, but the fans are near it sucking up that hot air. I don't know if that would have any negative effects. I use my laptop alot on flat surfaces without any cooling pad. So assume worst-case scenarios for this mod

Sure looks good

That looks like a really good idea.

Did you end up looking at doing this mod?
-
Nope. I didn't go through with this.

From my experience of testing my M17x R4 with the bottom cover off and elevated with a very marginal difference, 1°C to 2°C, I'd say no it won't make much difference.
If you were to run a laptop stand with a fan in the middle or a desktop fan blowing into those custom vents, then you will get some results in my opinion.
Whoever did that mod did a very clean job! I'd prefer smaller grill holes though. -
On my 17 R1 it would reduce about 10c but mine was much more drastic than the example cited above

I have a spare bottom cover so I may have to give the mod a go. Just need to find the right materials.

M17x R4 - Would this heat reduction mod work?
