Recently my 980m has got throttling, I have tried several vbios but still get pwr. You can see the frequency goes up and down. I also disabled the adapter warning but it didn't work. I have tried both 240w or 330w PSU but nothing changed. My vbios has unlocked the power limit before, and it worked perfectly several days ago.
It quite confuses me, can someone help me solve this problem? Thanks a lot.

What CPU do you use?
-
3820QM, I used quite a long time, but the gpu throttling just happened in recent days.
-
Just making sure.
Your CPU doesn't require that much power, so even a 180W PSU shouldnn't cause throttling. You tested multiple PSU's, that means your PSU is likely fine.
How are the thermal pads on the GTX 980m? Are they making proper contact to the VRM's? You might have tripping VRMs -
I think the thermal pads are fine and full contact to the VRMs. I also swapped the motherboard and os, but still not work. I found that electronic components are moist.
-
Moist? are you using cheap thermal pads? I've found many notebooks with cheap thermal pads which are getting wet from the cheap thermal pads.
So far it really seems that it's either your VRM's tripping or something wrong with your graphicscard. -
Well, maybe I should swap new thermal pads, what size should I buy?
-
Absolutely no idea, I'm usually working on clevo, MSI and Asus notebooks. Maybe @Raidriar has an idea how thick they should be.
-
1.0mm is the right size I believe.
OP try to switch to IGFX in the BIOS, boot into windows, then reboot into BIOS, switch to PEG, boot into windows again and see if throttle is gone. M18x has this problem, I do not know if M17x can also benefit from this trick -
I have 3d screen, I think this way won't work. M17x used to have this problem I shut down then reboot can solve it, but it doesn't work now.
Thank you very much! -
Try CMOS clear, remove main battery, CMOS battery, leave disconnected for maybe 10 minutes to drain residual power and force reset, see what happens?
-
I have tried that before.
-
Just replace the thermal pads for now, as you already mentioned, it's likely the cheap pads just dried out and are non functioning causing VRM tipping.
-
I replace the thermal pads but still get pwr.
-
Try to put notebook in hybernation and restore back, this trick helps me every time I have same problem.
-
I try but still fail. Before I have shut down and reboot but it was still the same.
-
I solve this problem, just shut down and reboot several times. Quite strange.
-
Actually, I do not know why, but trick for my PC works only with hibernation, reboot or shutdown or sleep or hybrid-sleep no work.
