So I made a few posts asking what cpu to upgrade to. Decided on a i7-3840QM CPU 2.8GHz. Was told I just needed to swap out the CPUs and that was it. I did that and now the laptop won't start. It has a black screen and beeps 4 times. I looked it up and that means timer/memory failure? I swapped out the ram sticks with new ones, same result. Now when I swap back to the old cpu its giving me the 7 beeps of death. Which is supposed to be processor/motherboard failure? I find it hard to believe that my motherboard was working perfectly fine yesterday and now fails after I just so happen to swap out a cpu and swap back to the working one.
Anyone know whats going on here? I need my laptop up and running as soon as possible so this really frustrating.
edit: Has anyone here successfully installed this cpu onto their m17x? Maybe theres a compatibility issue somewhere?

It’s usually a pretty easy swap. The R4 was released with the 3840. Are you sure you didn’t damage the CPU or socket during the swap? Made sure it went in with the arrow pointing in the right spot?
It’s strange that you had a ram error after the initial swap.
I’ve exchanged CPU’s in these machines lots of times and never come across the issue you’re having.
Maybe the replacement was faulty and has screwed up your board

I have also swapped CPUs, RAMs, GPUs in the m17xs and m18xs many times and found a workaround for me.
In your case, remove all RAM and the CPU, power it up and let it beep 3x the sequence. Then power it down and put in you old CPU and RAM and start it. If that worked it should boot up as usual.
Then power it down and remove the CPU and power it up and let it beep again 3x.
Then power it down and put in the new CPU.
Power it up.
And normally that should do it. -
I was very careful about about placing it and not damaging anything. Held it by its sides, made sure the arrow in the corner pointed to the same corner as the old cpu. Gently placed it and locked it in. Went to start it up and then black screen with beeping. My only guess is that the new CPU is somehow at fault. How can I check to make sure it isn't faulty? At this point I'm too scared it'll just break whatever other motherboard I place it into. Which begs the question if I do in fact need to buy another motherboard on ebay. And apparently sending this cpu back since I dont want it breaking the new motherboard. -
When I was looking at the motherboard I noticed that it looked different from the ones in all the example pictures and videos on how to swap CPUs. Is it possible I have an R3 motherboard and that it isnt compatible with this cpu? I did initially buy an R3 but got an R4 as a replacement so I think its possible.Last edited: Jul 22, 2021 -
If you had the 3820qm previously, then your board is definitely r4, as the r3 board isn't compatible with the 3xxx qm CPUs.
Die you do the steps I have mentioned above?
You could also remove the CMOS battery and connect the 2 pins with something metal ish.
M17x R4 CPU swap failure, 4 beeps.
