I have taken apart a couple M17x R4's to install the mSATA, etc., and was asked to help replace the damaged gloss factory edge 2 edge screen cover on a friends M17x R4.

To be clear, the LCD itself is fine. There is only damage to the clear factory "glass" (plastic) that covers the screen and provides the inner surface of the entire lid/screen assembly on the M17x R4.

How do you remove the edge 2 edge plexiglass? Does anyone know the part number to order a new one or if that is possible?

I'm looked in the owners (& basic service) manual found here: Manualsand Documents for Alienware M17x R4 | Dell US and while it includes good instructions on removing the entire lid as a unit, it does not mention the specifics of further lid / screen disassembly.

    Thanks,
    Spere

It's actually very difficult to remove the plexiglass and this is why If you buy a new legit screen it comes as the whole upper assembly, not just the LCD. I think you basically have two options:

    1) Remove the plexi glass and not replace it. This has been done though I don't know the specifics.

    2) Buy a new LCD assembly. This is probably your best option and if you keep an eye on ebay can be quite inexpensive. (I got a 1080p assembly for my machine for $130 which is much much much less than dell's quote.)

    Hope this helps :)

Thanks! -- yes, it certainly helps.

As a backup plan, I would greatly appreciate comments from anyone who has successfully removed the plexiglass. How did you do it? What holds the Plexiglass on?
