I just bought an alienware m17x r4, factory reset it, installed a bunch of the drivers I needed etc.

First time I'm using is now. I have it side by side my m17x r1 and the coloring for this is all off.

The tan skin of one person looks almost pale.

The whites on this website are hurting my eyes, while on my r1 they don't look as bright. The r1 looks perfect to me.

The blue colors on this site look too light. Much darker on the r1.

Same on yahoo. The purples look lighter on this and darker on the r1.

Is this something I should just get used to or is there a problem? Or is there a way to fix the colors?

All I've tried so far is fn f7 to change to my graphics card 660m. But that didn't change anything except screw up the resolution and make me put it back to 1600x900.

I looked all cross this site and google and have only found topics for the r3.

    Also online video looks fuzzier??

    ---
    Edit:

I'm starting to think this screen just might suck?

I just stood up and looked down, comparing the r1 screen to this r4 screen and the colors and everything remained the same on the r1... but the screen for this r4 everything got so bright that the picture of a guys face goes completely white and unseeable.

On the screen for the r1, the reds look red, the blacks look black, the greens look green. On the screen for the r4 the colors are all washed out and not dark at all. They barely even resemble their color when standing side by side the r1 screen.

Does it look better using an external monitor?

Looking at the information the person I bought it from sent me in an email, it looks like they got it with a poor screen. Wish I knew the screen would look like this before purchasing it. Failing on my part. I thought it would look as good as the one I bought almost 5 years ago. Did Alienware go backwards with the screens since then? Why?

They used one crappy 900p panel in the M17x R3/R4. Gamut is low (~60%?), viewing angles are extremely poor. This isn't the case with the 1080p screen option, but I don't know how it compares to the R1. Here are some videos that another forum member posted with screen comparisons, note that the second from the left is a R3, not R2.

If it bothers you that badly you could look into this:

Most low end panels have a pretty poor color gamut, and are blue biased. If you had the RGBLED panel in the R1, it is still a top tier panel, I believe in the R1 it was the same panel found on the Precision M6400, and the RGBLED panel on the R2 is the same as the M6500.

This is more disappointing than you can imagine.

I just bought a pc from best buy, didn't like the huge 23'' screen, missed the feel of my laptop... so I returned that and bought this...

And of course the product info on the amazon page has the screen the way I wanted it 1920x1080, and of course I missed that in the info the used person selling it showed me.

Why do I even bother, lol. I bought this because under no circumstances ever will I build a computer myself or rip off a screen myself and put on a new one nor do I have any funds to buy a new screen and then pay someone to do this and spend even MORE time without a new laptop. Sigh.

I feel at a loss. Like I should just resell this and continue to use my r1, never play any games, and just be content with it freezing and crashing all the time... all because of one stupid little screen on this r4. It's such a joke. WHY can't anything be easy?

Also, on the 23'' screen online videos were fuzzy which wasn't a screen problem but a resolution problem I'm guessing? Online videos of crap quality look perfect on the r1 I own, but here too even ignoring the pleated colors of the r4, the online video of videos not in hd look so fuzzy. Is this normal for every computer?

I would sell it, use the R1 for now, wait for a sweet Dell outlet coupon, sit around and refresh the outlet page a few hundred times a day, and snipe one down when time comes. Then you'll have a nice 1 year warranty as well.

you could always swap the screen out with a 1080p panel. Its not hard to do and you can find good prices on ebay from time to time. Thats what I did with my r3 and its a night and day difference. :)

What do you think's more cost effective?

And I would have no idea how to put a new screen on. I'd screw it up and ruin what could just be resold for $1400 or something.

well I got the 1080p panel for only about $120 so I thought it was personally more than worth it. As to changing the panels, its not rocket science, you'd just need to be careful and take things slow.

If you go this route make sure to use something that isn't sharp or that could gouge the plastic when you take the bezel off the screen, as tony said go slow, don't rush or you are liable to end up with gouges in the plastic where you had to pry the clips apart. I used a small flat head screw driver and was just VERY careful. The tech that changed my screen our the first time also used a screwdriver but didn't take his time and left the bezel damaged in several places. I opted to change it myself the second time. Also if you go this route be aware that the webcam is attached to the screen with 1 small screw, so you will want to move that over :)

Also if you do decide to go to the 1080p display I think you will be surprised by how much of a difference it will make. They shipped me a replacement with the 1600x900 screen and then sent me the 1080p screen to replace it after I got the computer so I had to use the lesser screen for a day or two. It was honestly like night and day, everything is clearer, colours are much nicer.

I wish I trusted myself enough to switch out the screen, buy the right parts, or to put it back together.

If you want a nice screen, I have a new 120hz 1920x1080 screen. I bought it for $150. Let me know if you want it. I'm just selling at the price I got it for.
