Sounds like an easy topic to help me fix but sadly this one is a real P.I.T.A.! So heres the info:
Bought my m17x R4 used. Seller says the DVD worked for him to install windows.
    Specs: 3820qm 8gb ram, 240g corsair force 3 gt ssd, Radeon 7970m, windows 8 pro. Bios A10
-The DVD drive has never shown up in the bios or windows, but when the computer is in windows I can put a cd/dvd in it and it sounds like its reading but it never shows up in my computer or the device manager.
-The eject button on the laptop works fine (so there is a working physical connection from the drive to the laptop for sure).
-got a replacement DVD drive from the seller :) huge thanks and great customer service! unfortunately the replacement does the exact same thing.
-Tried reflashing bios with A10 just thinking maybe it was corrupt. Still the same issue.

I am losing hope here. The only things i think i haven't tried, but can't see having issues with, are the interposer cable and the motherboard itself.

Please if anyone has any ideas let me know! i am totally lost.

Really weird issue, could try putting a HDD into the SATA slot for the DVD drive, and seeing if its recognising it, sounds weird since it sounds like its working, could be a loose connection I guess.

DDDenniZZZ is right, you could try an HDD there and see if it gets recognized.
Have you tried flashing the BIOS to the latest version available?

unfortunately i don't have a hard drive cage for the dvd bay. Yes A10 is the latest bios and i have reflashed it 3 times now hoping that it was the issue.

That's everything that comes up to my mind, perhaps you should send it in for repairs so that the techs can take a look at it and see if the ODD or the mobo slot is the one causing the issue.

Ok so upon further inspection... I took the dvd drive I swapped out of this machine because it wasnt working and put it in an HP G6 laptop. Long story short the drive works but doesnt read burnt discs. however it does read music cds and original DVDs. So my problem still remains and it seems to be the motherboard or the interposer cable.
If anyone has a spare interposer cable please let me know!!
