i'm seeing a lot of eBay sales for the 120hz screen and it looks like any other laptop screen but, the how to videos on remov it, act as if the LCD is permanentley attached to the front glass. is possible to buy just the LCD and swap that out with out a whole assembly?

It is possible but I really don't recomend it, I currently have a disassembled display assembly laying around somewhere (removed the front glass which is just plastic btw) and it really is a pain in the ass to remove it. Not to mention refitting the whole thing without dust is another mayor problem.

I see, I ask because i have the crappy 900p model that i paid $650 usd for. i was trying to not spend $200 USD upgrading. maybe i will have to sell the old screen or something which i doubt the lower model is worth much?

Nah the 900p panel is worth next to nothing (25$) but it would still get the price down.

The only reason I disassembled the display assembly is to mod it in the future to turn the front plastic into a bezel using a laser cutter. The biggest drawback of the R4 is the annoying reflections on the screen due to the plastic thingy in front it. The funny thing is that the 1080p lg panel behind it is a non glare matte type.

However I picked up a dirt cheap msi gt72 and that fixes the problem (and more so) thus my R4 will probably be sold. If that happens then I might pick up another R4 if a MXM Polaris gpu works without problems but I'm not gonna take that gamble atm.

And for those who are interested, here are some pictures:

Thanks for the pics and info, i only ask because the only available 1080p screens do not have the front glass but, are lone screens. all except a few places like parts people who want almost $300 USD for the 1080p screen with glass. even if i sell my old screen for $70 bucks that's still almost $200.

Check e-bay, there are some good U.S based sellers selling new screen assemblies on there as well. Unfortunately these screens were designed to come as complete assemblies with the front cover and hinges. You can pry off the cover like Drake did but getting back on is sure to yield plenty of dust and debris between the cover and panel. Also, new double sided tape will probably be needed as the old tape will most likely tear up during removal. You can also do what this member did :D

so the complete screen assemblies, are they also 120hz? I noticed the thread on 120hz 1080p screens is for the alienware 17, not necessarily the m17x r4.

one of the part numbers i'm seeing on ebay is,

    • 17.3" Display
    • LCD Screen Dell P/N: 18J1G or H8D3K
    • Model#: LP173WF1 (TL)(B3) or B173HW01
    and another is,

Genuine Alienware M17XR4 17.3" LCD Screen Panel with Hinges GTDTJ H4T5C YD9K2
    DELL Alienware M17x R4 17.3" LCD SCREEN H4T5C Screen P/N K6PJ1 / MGNC7 / 0FKCP / VCV1F

The Dell part numbers I found for the 120Hz 3D screen are:

DHCG2 for the complete assembly and
    GN36T for the panel only

The part numbers you listed appear to be for 60Hz AU Optronics or LG screens.
