    Hi,

I have been passed on a R4 from my brother who upgraded, his current config has 660M, and 8gb Ram.

I was thinking to put in a SSD and upgrade the GPU to 7970. The laptop still has about 8 months of warranty left he bought 2 years of warranty, will upgrading the GPU, ram , ssd have any repercussions on warranty, is it a bad idea to upgrade ?

i did read that dell says for warranty you must have all original parts in the laptop, but then i've read people have done upgrades and dell has honored warranty for stock parts.

    Thoughts and comments are welcome.

the parts you buy for your laptop from dell will "update" your original configuration under their warranty. all 3rd party purchases are not covered and must be either removed or accounted for if you are to envoke a system replacement policy.
IE if it came stock with 8gb ram, you need to keep those parts until the warranty is out. Alienware does not support or cover 3rd party hardware, but will support all 1st party warranty hardware and software, and will respect your 3rd party modifications(respect not support).

IF you want to upgrade your GPU you must buy it from the dell/alienware corporation vendor, you can't use any other OEM gpu in your m17x system that isn't a signed dell/alienware product.(this doesn't apply for desktops).

Alienware is usually very understanding of the users, and wont cover accidental damage, but will usually understand that a user will have made upgrades or modifications on their own.

Remember if you are dealing with an alienware branded product you must deal with alienware(phone # 1800alienware), don't contact dell directly about an alienware product. This is a mistake many alienware owners do.
