We're on a camping trip and the Wife and I enjoy watching movies on my R4.

Is it safe for us to recharge the R4 using the generator?

I've been told that the generator doesn't always put out clean power i.e. A more squarish wave than the normal single phase sine.

    Should I be concerned?

Are you planning on charging the battery directly with the generator or still using the charger while the battery is in the system?

I don't recommend the first method unless you know what you are doing but since you're asking this question, then no, don't do it.
If it's the latter, there's no problem, the charger will trip before anything can happen.

This all started with my grandfather being concerned that the inverter would not put out a perfect sine wave. I certainly would never consider picking off the terminals off the battery and trying to hook that up to the generator. This would be charged by an AC outlet in an RV while the generator is running. The battery will be located in the laptop, with the charger connected to the back of the laptop.

    Thanks for the reply!

I'm leaning towards holding out till the end of the trip, instead of risking any damage to the electronics. My question mainly has to do with the circuitry in our chargers- do they have sufficient protection to rectify a poor AC signal?

I see people using small generators to power laptops all the time. But I know nothing more about it.
