I've had 3 failed upgrades so far, all known to work. The 980m and 1070 (which I think was due to the shoddy motherboard) then the WX 7100 which was DOA. Then my 780m died, then the motherboard died, then my 4930mx. Then my HDD interposer cable died. Just a serious pain, and I dont have the funds to stretch it. I might as well just go with a 980m with the plan to get the 1070 later, just didnt want to use nvidia.

Though if you get that 4k panel running and overclock the refresh rate for 1080p then I might just reconsider. I plan to build a desktop regardless with AMD based components just wanted a sister machine that was also AMD powered.

That is quite a shame to hear, the biggest issue I ever seen upgrading laptops have been in the display department, displays are incredibly difficult to get correct specially when buying outside of original screens and more often than not you have to settle with inferior screens because they are only ones that work, screens are hilariously property strict.

However you be happy to note that Rx 480/580/WX 7100 are edging ahead of the 1060 6GB now in quite a range of games lately, thanks to AMD's driver optimisation spree going on and FineWine technology (Joke intended) the WX 7100 is by all intent just a Rx 580 with Pro Radeon certified components, better die and Pro Radeon vBIOS.
And if I can get the card working in PEG, I should also be able to unlock the vBIOS fully without much problems and adjust it closer to a stock Rx 480 or Rx 580 experience at 150 or 170W although I do not want to push it too far it apparently has extremely beefy VRM.

So if you do ever decide to get the WX 7100 and use PEG, it will be better experience than 1060 specially on the software side imao. Its just a matter of getting it to work I suppose that is the bigger issue.

I never considered the 1060 an option, it's basically a less flexible lower vram 980m in my eyes.

But yes I'll wait on your results. In the meantime I'll start looking into modding in a quick disconnect water loop

That taobao link just dropped to 204 USD. Given that, I may try one last time after I get the refund from my last wx 7100 purchase. The owner seems to be unresponsive so it's looking like I'll get my refund and keep the gpu.

Dell firmware seems to block the WX 7100 from working with the eDP 120HZ screen, however it will work with a eDP 60HZ/4K 60hz iirc

Agreed, it really is quite nice, even the colors are half decent for a 6bit panel, makes me miss my ZR30W however

Its not as though eDP panels cant output 60hz, so, curious to if you changed the EDID to boot with 60hz first just to have a working panel without the extra investment.

Overriding the EDID is pretty painful if it does not work on your laptop you need speciality hardware and adapters to edit it which can cost a lot, typically not worth the trouble and you need EDID editor that supports your monitor EDID revision version

Well anything is a pain if you are ignorant to the process. Though admittedly my interest for that doesn't exist lol was just a thought as the card may likely work if the panel defaulted to 60hz instead of 120hz.

To edit EDID you need it to connect to a Windows computer OR a special EDID input device that usually costs hundreds of dollars, cheapest way would just be to buy eDP to HDMI board for your specific panel on eBay.
Most EDID editing software cost money too though there some free ones no idea how good they are, its a popular method to overclock monitors using this method of overriding EDID at least back in the day

Here is an example, software is free but you need those devices.

The EDID is stored in a plain EEPROM/Flash ROM, a cheapo programmer and a SOIC-8 clip is all you need to program it, at most you need to lift one leg to disconnect the Write Protect pin so you can flash it.

Do you have a tutorial on this or a thread about it? I suppose you still need the software to program it but do you copy the existing firmware and then modify it and flash it back?

I have done it with a TL886 programmer, but I was only reflasing corrupted EDID that was copied from another display, no idea on what to use to change the parameters, there is also linux utilities, and if I'm not mistaken RWeverything can read and write EDID if its not write locked.

Looks like it could be the only option I have, the useless American online store I bought my panel from sent me the wrong panel, LVDS one despite confirming with me prior they had the specific model I wanted in stock.
Useless would not be enough to describe them.

Anything that is 60Hz 5.2mm width eDP panels is almost impossible to find anymore in China, but the 120Hz ones are everywhere. As long as I can use a programmer to download the EDID itself from the panel so I can modify it then its not a problem, this is the only part where I am really confused about.
