So I just sold an m17x r4, and the person just messaged me saying the laptop is dead. It was working fine before it left. I even took a video of it. He said that he switched to the 680m and it asked to reboot, and when it shut down it never restarted. Just stayed dead.. Power button does nothing. That sounds fishy to me doesn't it? I've never heard of something like that happening, ever. What do you guys think.

First things I'd do is have him pop the CMOS battery, do a power drain, reinstall the battery and try it again.

Have him send it back and check it out for yourself. Just because that's what they says they did isn't always the case.

I'm actually afraid for him to send it back because I have a feeling he screwed something up. And then I'd be stuck with a screwed up laptop

You give him no waranty on selling it, only a DoA probably, but it wasnt DoA, he switched some setting himself, and now it doesnt work, not your responsibility.

Just make him powerdrain and all should be fine tbh, if not, bios doesnt randomly die(never heard of it on the r4)

He could have also messed with the drivers before he switched the graphics to the discrete card. He could also have taken out the working 680m from the notebook and put in a Non/Op 680m from a different system. Then sends the "defective" system back for a refund and...BAM! Y'all are out a working 680m card. It's why I am so cagey when it comes to the newbie users posting their first post entitled "Brand New laptop DOA...DEATH TO ALIENWARE!"

I have seen someone try and succeed in pulling off a parts switcheroo first hand. So I can sympathize with Luis, Natalia and the rest of the Alienware reps. They all's have to balance having to fix the genuine defects and issues with making sure someone's not swindling them hand over fist with parts from a previous broken system.

Yeah.. I took a video of it working fine and everything posting in Windows. And of my packing it in the original box and shipping it. That may save me if I need to fight this no?

If that guy specifically said he turned it on and it was working before it broke down, then you have the evidence it's not DOA and you shouldn't be liable for what happened further. But if PayPal or eBay stands between you and the buyer, it's another story as they tend to favor the buyer and in many times, screw up the sellers.

That said, it does not mean you are screwed up but you should be aware of the worst case scenario.

I think it doesn't hurt to help him try power drain or reset CMOS. As the seller, I think that is what you should do but you are not responsible to help him further. You do need to help him transfer the warranty to his name, though.

Give him the detailed troubleshooting. Also, does it have warranty still? I guess t does... then why don't you tell him to call Alienware and have it repaired?
It's kinda fishy... There might be several things that could have gone wrong..

That is usually not the case for evidence. As for any buyers, before they swap parts from a purchased laptop, they would turn it on to make sure it is working properly first to ensure that the seller did not sell to the buyer a dead laptop. It's a given that the laptop was working, and the buyer decides to do the upgrade.

Just tell the buyer to troubleshoot first, then call Alienware support, and if it does not get fixed, then it's not your fault.

So if everything else fell through and a dispute from the buyer is open, This is what I would summarize the transaction to counter the dispute ....

" The unit was working fine , and a video was made to show that it was working properly before it was shipped. The unit was shipped in an original box that guarantee 100% protection to the laptop ".

    The you proceed,

" The buyer tampered with the laptop by removing the original video card and adding his own nividia graphic card, and after the installation, the buyer said that the unit did not turn on. "

    Then just wait and see.

I told him the power drain and i said something might have been knocked loose in transit. But again, why would it work to begin with? He said it worked until he "switched to the 680m" and when it asked for a reboot it never came back, just dead.. just sounds super weird to me. yeah its in warranty and I'm helping the transfer. but I wonder if he is trying to pull a fast one.

Once the transfer is done, ask him to contact Alienware they will come out and sort it for him.

It will all be sorted in a couple of days.

    Good luck

Sound like complete rubbish to me.

Let Dell Warranty deal with it.
