M17x R4 serious stuttering across all games (sudden fps drops)

the first instance happens at about 41 seconds and if you continue watching it happens in a regular pattern and most often happens during an attack or getting attacked, especially ultimates.

And like the titles says, this happens on every other multiplayer game I play (Dead by daylight, Rust, Rainbow six siege etc.) Although some games are worse than others. Such as Siege, in Siege its the worse, happens every 15-30 seconds.

I've noticed that when its capped at 60 fps it happens less. Which is why I turn on vsync halfway through the recording to demonstrate.

I recently purchased a 240gb SSD and 2TB Seagate hard drive. I had a 2TB SSHD hybrid drive that had the same issue. It didn't happen at first when I got it, the problem came months after I installed it which is why I thought it was a hard drive issue. It also had terrible caching that led to other problems so thats why it was my scapegoat. Well I installed overwatch on both drives and while the SSD was obviously faster, the issue still remained.

My temps seem fine, as shown in the video the GPU runs at about 75-80 degrees and the cpu seems to run a bit more hot at 85 to 90 degrees. Which would probably be my next guess since its the only part I haven't replaced in this laptop.

Another thing to note is that this issue persists in singleplayer games but to a much lesser extent. Namely DOOM and Witcher 3 as I've tested.

So I'm not sure how to go about troubleshooting this further and would appreciate any input anyone can give me.

GTX 1060m
3rd Generation Intel Core i7-3 820QM (8MB Cache, up to 3.7GHz w/ Turbo Boost 2.0)
240gb SSD, 2TB HDD
16gb RAM
120hz 3D monitor

Also, lowering graphics quality in games makes the stuttering happen less frequently.

Sounds like your card is hitting a limit and throttling. Install something like GPU-Z and leave it running while you play a game, when the slowdown appears alt-tab out and take a look at the "PerfCap Reason" in the sensors tab. My guess would be you're hitting either a temperature or power limit. If its power, just try putting the laptop into hibernate and wake it back up again, that fixes a problem with the nvidia 900 series artificially throttling in the M17x R4, so may also work for the 1060.

Thanks for the insight. However I've narrowed it down to the CPU instead of the GPU as overheating. I found out the tjmax temp for the cpu is 100 degrees and it was hovering slightly over 90 so that wasn't good. I repasted it and its temperatures improved slightly and made a noticeable difference. However it can still go up to 90 degrees so I figure my only other options is to downclock it or remove the overclocking completely.

I dont know if you remember my other thread but I dont want to accidentally set the boot mode to legacy since I have a 1060. So I was wondering if you knew how I could go about adjusting the overclocking safely.
