I'm looking for a way to at least monitor GPU temps if nothing else. Ideally I'd like to do a whole lot more but I guess baby steps are necessary. Here's what I've tried so far:

GPU-Z will not start at all, it just hangs on the splash screen.

HWiNFO64 runs but only sees the integrated GPU.

The plain old GPU Meter gadget on the main Win7 gadgets page loads but just shows 0 for everything.

These results were the same with the system as configured by Dell, after installing the beta 12.5 drivers, after installing the Dell 5/9 drivers, and after re-formatting and starting over with the Dell 5/9 drivers. The GPU is working according to benchmark and game experience (P5784 iirc in 3dmark11), but I'd like to monitor temps and voltages. Beyond that I'd like to try OC'ing the thing but that seems like something to be done after the system gets to 'working as intended' :(

    Any ideas?

I haven't had any problems with HWiNFO64 detecting temps for the 7970m, but if that's not working for you, you could try MSI Afterburner. It reports the same temps as HWiNFO64 does for me.

I don't know if you want to OC the GPU, but you could using that as well, just look at Section 10 of SlickDude80's thread : http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m17x/658958-guide-installing-amd-7970m-m17x-r3-illustrated-guide.html

Just tried GPU-Z and it crashed for me too. Odd, since v0.6.1 supposedly added support for the 7970m.

Oh yeah, I forgot about afterburner when I was reinstalling things after the format. I think that did monitor temps. I tried the OC method presented before I did my format and it did not work at all, my sliders went completely blank. I'll try it again in a minute.

edit: I lied. Afterburner does not show temperatures, only usage and fan speed.

    Any other ideas?

Ok I got this issue before, the solution is uninstall the graphic card driver then CCleaner it and re-install it again! The driver must be the one on Dell's support page, not the mod one!(The mod one is for R3 not R4)
Here's the official AMD graphic card driver
Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]
When you uninstall the catalyst, remember to choose "Express Uninstall ALL AMD Software", then run CCleaner. After that, install AMD Catalyst again, choose "Custom Install" and then select all of them

I'm running the Dell one after a clean windows install. No other driver has been installed.

Try to uninstall and then install again. And did you install the Intel graphic card driver before the amd graphic driver?

Also it may be normal it does not read your Video card because is not in use, try playing a game and run Hardware monitor at the same time!

And there you will see it !!!

guys, don't freak. The 7970m is too new and has zero app support right now. You just have to give it sometime :)

Slick is 100% correct. The 7970M does not have even full AMD driver support yet, so it's unreasonable to expect third-party support so soon. It's still a brand new product and somewhat of a work in progress for AMD. This will most likely be sorted out in the next month or so. Those monitoring programs generally rely on information from the hardware drivers. It may be longer than a month or so before there is any vBIOS tweaking support, depending on how difficult AMD makes it for hackers to access things that AMD would prefer remain inaccessible. This dilemma is rather common with newly released graphics cards, and veteran gamers and benchers are used to it.

^ well it makes things difficult to assess for people considering returning their machines. Perhaps I'm the only one out there not satisfied with the R4 though, it appears to be that way.

CPU-Z also crashed for me, I'm not too worried though. As others have said this card is very new.

Why not give aida64 a shot, it has a win7 gadget and the ability to monitor temps, but likely may or may not have support for the 7970M, perhaps even try the thread where a registry hack enables the performance mode in the catalyst drivers

Launch a game and then turn on HWINFO.
When the card is deactivated it will send no temperature signal.
Like a car where the engine is off u cannot move it(no external help).
I hope its quite clear for you.
But maybe it will say Intel HD 4000 Graphics instead of AMD Radeon HD7970M.
    Give it a try!
