So I've had this laptop for almost a decade now and the only part that I havent upgraded is the CPU. And its starting to slow down and such since it was overclocked for most of its lifespan. So I was wondering what CPUs I can get that are compatible. My price range is around $500, can go higher if it's worth it. I'll need a guide on how to do it properly since I imagine its more than just physically swapping out the CPUs, much like the graphics card upgrade process. But I may be wrong. Again, first time doing this so Ill take all the info I can get! Thanks!

Its literally just a physical swap out, tuning is another matter though. You shouldnt be spending 500 USD on a 3920xm

Yes, just a physical swap. Be careful not to damage the pins when installing the new CPU though and get yourself some decent thermal compound. If you want to get an XM processor then Intel XTU is a pretty easy program to use for overclocking but make sure you jump online and check for guides on how to use it properly or you could damage your CPU or board.

No, that's not the case!
Just the Intel Core Mobile of the 3rd generation are compatible, that's the Ivy Bridge Mobile series, mainly the i7 3xxx QM and XM CPUs are interesting, performance wise. -
