Hi all! Just ordered a m17x R4 with 3720 and 7970m with base 6GB RAM. I am guessing its going to be 4+2GB configuration. Since its dual channel architrecture, I am thinking 4+2GB will hurt performance when it tries to access the stuff in 4GB stick that does not have a counterpart in 2GB one.

If so, I am planning to replace the 2GB DIMM with a 4GB Corsair Vengeance from NewEgg for $25. Can i do this swap and will it work - both original factory 4GB DIMM and the Corsaid DIMM in the same bank?

    TIA

Just make sure both 4GB RAM sticks are running at the same speed (i'm assuming the 4GB stick that is coming with your laptop is DDR3 1600) and you won't have a problem.

Yes, both are 1600 speed RAM. I was more concerned with the RAM timings etc. - does anyone know if that is going to be an issue? Also is there a need to replace 2GB with 4GB if you are happy with 6GB - for original reason i quoted i.e. performance hit? Will there be performance hit with 4+2 GB RAM?

i ordered my m17xr4 with the base 6gb 1600mhz ddr3, and the sticks are not made from the same company, the 4gb was samsung, and the 2gb was micro technologies, in desktops i try to not mix memory, but in this laptop it dosent matter, i also purchased an 8gb g.skill 1600mhz kit and added to it, so now i have 14gb of memory, and i notice no loss in performance. cpu-z shows the memory as running in dual channel, the reason i dont mix match in desktops is i usually overclock my memory
