Wow the underneath is actually the exciting bit. So much mesh! Has to be good for cooling.

It'll probably trap a lot of dust over time. One would need a vacuum cleaner to maintain it's hygiene.

I've removed the mesh from my M15X so I have to clean my fans directly to maintain it's hygiene.
Nice bit of mesh should be no problem :)

The 14 version priced at the spec I want is over £2000.
Not a buy for me yet.

    However does it feature Mxm?

Seems like the keys are flat again. If they were slightly more concave, I think that the keyboard would be great for typing...

I think I look the looks of my keyboard on the R4 more :S but it is hard to really be sure without actually using one. I am not a fan of the whole track pad lighting up either, I prefer just the outside edge but that's just personal opinion. The mesh on the bottom is awesome, with a U3 under there you would not even need the laptop fans with that much air getting through. I do like the redesigned lid better then the R4 though :)

Looks a lot better in these pics than the leaked ones that have been floating around. Can't wait to have mine in hand. Love the new lid aesthetic, and the mesh on the bottom should be great for cooling.

Look at the left side of the laptop. There's a good 10cm of free port space. Perfect for Ethernet port and then replace on the right what use to be the Ethernet port with an extra USB port.
Don't understand what the person drawing the blue print was thinking -_-"

Guys , really now. Am i the only one that thinks that the new alienware laptop line is great compared to other laptops out there, its very futuristic and slim with space look.
    BUT
compared to the classic line (m17 r2 , m18r2 etc) it lacks the look. i mean WHERE DID THE front exhaust grills go? these were the most characteristic portion of the whole alienware brand!! i mean just show a smal pic of the grills to someone and he will immediatley understand that its from an alienware laptop.

... is it just me? but wouldnt change a current m17 or m18 for a new one for the looks. and even if the hardware is taken in to account with the current line having the prevous generation of i7s with great potential for oc (3,5-4Ghz) and the latest cards 7970-780m , there isnt actualy a need to upgrade even for hardware...

I Don't know much about other brands but m17x r5 sure is better looking than 17"s offered by MSI and Clevo.

What can i say, i love the new exterior and i assume that the HW specs are up to par...but......what in gods name did they do with the user surface.....i kinda dig the simplicity of it (business vs aesthetics) but, i hate the keyboard...i just love the smooth touch of the AW keys and the keys are a little bend inwards so your finger will "fall" in the keys but, when i look at the new keyboard i think, copy/paste random manufacturer....not even a WASD marking on it or nothing that says:" hey, i am a gaming keyboard".

It has no characteristic feature to stand out or get that oooooeeehhhh and aaaaaaaaaaaahhhh factor, it's just a keyboard :s

    Then about the camera:
Why did they make it stand out, i mean, it's not like the owner doesn't know where the camera is..why did they emphasize on it so much....it breaks the neutral/symmetrical look of the screen and from afar the whole user end of the laptop....what a shame.

I am perfectly happy with my obesitas M17x R2 (see specs) compared to this bas tard-offspring from jekyll and hyde...

Their sales are gonna suck this time around. I'd say 70 percent of alienwares fans either don't like the design, or don't have the need to upgrade because the spec bump in hardware isn't suffient. Add to that the subtraction of the name plate, subtraction of the top right media buttons, 2 pipe instead of 3 for the GPU heat sink, and smaller battery, and over all we have an epic fail I think.

Look close at the underside of the M 17... other than the exterior update, nothing design wise on the MOBO inside has truly been re-invented it looks like the R4 with a new shell. The best part of this new exterior design is the aluminum shell and the lights along the sides and back of the casing, other than that it closely resembles a mix between a Clevo/MSI/Sager now (and still better any day :D).

The R3/R4 is definitely a very sleek and cutting edge design, the improvement from the R/R2, was perfect (other than the plastic instead of aluminum), so trying to top the design again I can only image how tough it was since the R3/R4 was so nice to look at.

For me the plaatic instead of aluminium was a major - . As was the transition from 2 gpu slots to 1.
The only 2 improvements i saw in r3 were the better easiness of dismantling (in r2 for a minor change inside you had to dismantle virtually everything)
And the feel of the plastic that they say is far better than the hard plastic of r2

Edit: and of course dont forget the 1200 rgb screen they stoped in r3... another major -

Concerning the new r5 I concur that it resembles a clevo sager with better quality and the nice led lit neon strips and touchpad.

But it lacks the whoa factor of current generation alienwares.
These damn front airways should never be taken off. Maybe change shape but not totally taken of

I don't really like the design to be honest. It looks a bit like a fancy Asus/Toshiba.

I wonder looking at my R4 and looking at the R5 keyboard you would be able to swap them out? If you could I'd be well on board with that!? They look smiliar but obviously it depends on connection and actual dimensions I guess

I do not think you want to do that, especially that in the new keyboard the colours are more vibrant. Once you have the new system with you and you compare it, the new keyboard will grow* on you and you will like the feel of it, even more than the previous version.

What does not Alienware have in term of 'keyboard'? Something like what MSI has in their systems... There is nothing better you can make than what MSI keyboards have (steelseries), unless you put a mechanical keyboard and you suffer from extra weight. So, MSI beats Alienware at the default screen quality and keyboard; other than that, Alienware has a better look overall, better built and BETTER COOLING solution on their systems (Except the 14" models which is a disaster and Alienware / Dell team refuse to dump the dvd-rom to add an extra fan - marketing issue which results in failure of sale on it's bigger brother 17").

True, it just seems the R4 has a better keyboard layout, and I like the way it let's most of the colours through with each key having the colour border. Nice to know though that the keyboard in the R5 is good, as I thought the R4 keyboard was fantastic.

    Quick Comment.

Keyboards is ''bla bla bla'' - WHO CARES ABOU THE KBD ?

    Very Sad.

No RGB LED type LCD - even as an OPTION

I respect Dell. But sometimes i feel they are so stupid that i will have to continue upgrading my R2 for another 10 years....Bloody RGB LED....

You will not have my money....for now...

I was very close to getting an R4 last year and got a little excited about the R5 but most probably I'll pass. The underside with all the mesh is going to end up full of dust very fast and because there is so little space between the bottom and the table surface, I bet it is very loud too. The keyboard is another minus...

Y U NECRO! But to answer this is incorrect. dust does not build up and keyboard has a nice feeling with the keys.
