Does anyone else output their m17x through hdmi to a flat panel tv? When I do so, the speakers of my TV always begin to cackle with what sounds like static. The video is flawless, but the cackling persists. If I open sound options and click Properties after clicking HDMI (out of the three options listed) the cackling goes away for a short while, only to return randomly, or triggered by opening anything that plays sound (although the cackling always occurs when first connecting to the TV, irrespective of if a sound is playing on the computer).

Since my ps3 and cable box don't do this, I've deduced that it cannot be my TV or my cables (as I've used the ports and cables of those devices).

If others are having this same issue, perhaps it is a defective HDMI port in the computer itself.

If no one else is having this issue, maybe I just got a dud motherboard.

for more info, my TV is a 42inch westinghouse and I'm running vista 64bit ultimate at the moment (I switched from 7 because I thought it was an issue caused by sound drivers and 7, but I was wrong, obviously).

seriously though, someone hook their dell m17x to their tv via hdmi and let me know what happens... and what operating system you're using... and what your tv/operating system/driver you're using.

Not the same problem, but the same symptoms.

Every now and then I'm getting interimitent crackling from my external speaker system when connected through my external Creative XFi card.

Not a show stopper and certainly irrelevant to your issue :(

I'm betting the problem has to do with DPC Latency. I don't know about Vista, but with Win7 this laptop is known to have very high DPC Latency spikes, which can result in audio choppiness, but is usually seen as simply crackling in the audio.

Do you have this issue with your regular audio as well? Perhaps it's just more noticeable because your TV is amplifying the signal?

I get crackling and audio distortion here and there using the 3 mini-jack outs (5.1 surround sound). Very annoying as I am used to the super clean audio I got from my Mac Pro (optical hooked up to 5.1).

    Music now sounds pretty bad.

I have a Toshiba and HP laptop - I have garbled sound which lasts for 10 sec at 6 minute intervals. I connected a Sony Vaio to my Toshiba tv and it works fine. I took my HP to a buddy's home and it works fine. So its just the HP wont handshake with my Toshiba. No idea. Can someone help.

I'm loathe to take my TV in for fear of Toshiba making it more worse. I have not experienced nor heard good feedback from their customer service. It will be the last time I purchase either product....at least without testing it in the store first.

I don't have any issues running either of our M17x systems to our Sony HDTV via HDMI or using VGA to the HDTV & the audio connections for analog 5.1 to our A/V receiver.

    ZenithNoesis,
You probably would have received replies faster if this thread was started in the M17x subforum.

Seems like I missed your post indeed...

So from what you said, I had the exact same issue that you but with my previous Laptop (HP HDX 9250EF Dragon). There was some random weird sounds going through HDMI to my Sony Amp or TV (depending where I pluged it).
My OS was Win7 32 and my HDMI cable was 15m lengh (which I though it was the issue... too long cable). Never had the issue with Vista on this HP.
Same as you when I was clicking on the Sound Card properties, the weird cackling always went away to eventually return after watching a movie or else.
Bad point is that I never found out what was the cause (nor anyone I asked about it).

Then I replaced the HP Laptop with the M17x and never had this issue ever again (since 3 months that is).

So according to this, since I didn't change anything else than the laptop, it should not be due to your TV or HDMI cable, but the laptop itself.

Might be the DPC latency as jt-3 said... unfortunately I have no clue about how it could be solved.

I have hooked my M17x up to a Denon receiver via hdmi with the GTX 280m SLI, the 4870s, windows 7 and windows vista

All worked fine for me.....have you made sure the problem is not your receiver?

    same here!
i use the x-fi usb and i have some cracking noises after booting.
however if i turn up the volume in windows and play a song it stops immediately. i thought it was a problem with the not so great x-fi usb-system.

I would RUN away from x-fi....it is not worth it and has awful driver support. The onboard stuff works fine in these laptops
